Marin Ljubicic Join's Union's Attack
Move From Linz to Köpenick

1. FC Union Berlin have signed an attacking reinforcement in Marin Ljubicic. The 22-year-old is leaving LASK and the Austrian Bundesliga for Berlin-Köpenick.
A Start in Dalmatia; A stop on the Donau
Discovered by Hajduk Split, one of the largest and most famous clubs in Croatia, Ljubicic made his way from 2017 from the Dalmatian sides’ youths to the professional team. Having impressed with good performances for the U17 and U19 teams he finally made his debut in the SuperSport HNL, Croatia's top division, on 20 March 2021, and marked his debut by scoring the only goal Hajduk's 1-0 win over HNK Sibenik. He became a regular part of the matchday squad straight away. The following season, Ljubicic only played for Hajduk's U19 team in the UEFA Youth League, otherwise he played exclusively for the first team.
Continued good performances (including nine goals and four assists in 44 games) were attracting the attention of foreign clubs by the summer of 2022. It was then that LASK brought the then 19-year-old on loan to Linz and the Austrian Bundesliga. The six-foot centre forward impressed from the outset, scoring again in his league debut and notching six goals after just three Bundesliga matchdays. All of this was enough for LASK to sign Ljubicic permanently after just six months.
Since then, he wore the Linz shirt 100 times, scoring 43 goals.
The Split-born Croatian has also made a name for himself internationally. He has made one appearance for the Croatian U20 national team, followed by a further 19 for the U21 side. At club level, he has so far played in 18 games in various UEFA competitions, scoring four goals.
Three facts about Marin
- Ljubičić was named in Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic's preliminary squad ahead of the 2024 European Championship.
- He scored four goals in 60 minutes during LASK's 5-1 win over Wolfsberger AC in the 2022/23 season.
- Whenever Ljubičić scores, points are almost guaranteed. His teams have only lost four of the 31 matches in which he has scored.
The views on the transfer
“When you play in Austria, you naturally follow the Bundesliga. So, I was all the more pleased to receive interest from Union and am now glad that everything has worked out,” said a delighted Ljubicic on his move to Union. “I'm looking forward to the club and the city and I particularly want to impress the fans as quickly as possible.”
“Marin is a huge talent in his age group and has not only shown his qualities in front of goal at LASK. His vision, speed and technical strengths will also help us and give the coaching team more options in attack,” added Horst Heldt, director of men's professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin.
