Extended Deal for Striker
Andrej Ilić to Remain at Union
With his goals in the season finale, important moments in decisive matches, and a final commitment last summer, Andrej Ilić has quickly established himself in a permanent position with the men's first team.
Now the Serbian striker is to continue his journey in Köpenick and has extended his contract with 1. FC Union Berlin.
When goals mean points
When Ilić joined Union on loan in the summer of 2024, he had already embarked on a successful career path in Serbia, Latvia, Norway, and France. What followed was a development that made him a key figure in Union's attack in a short period of time.
The 6'2" striker showcased his qualities in front of goal particularly in the second half of 2024/25. Seven goals in his first 16 Bundesliga appearances for Union speak for themselves, as does the way he influenced games. His important goals in the season's final sprint are particularly memorable. Ilić scored the final goal in the 2-1 away win in Freiburg, turning the match around and paving the way for a crucial success. He also scored twice in the memorable 4-4 draw against VfB Stuttgart, playing a significant role in Union securing a point at the Alte Försterei after a spectacular match.
With his ability in the air, his presence in the penalty area, and his instinct for decisive moments, Ilić quickly became an important focal point in Union's attack. His significance for the team was also evident after his permanent signing in the summer of 2025. In 50 competitive matches for Union so far, the forward has been directly involved in 25 goals, contributing 13 goals and twelve assists.
Statements on the contract extension
“I have felt very comfortable at Union since day one. The team, the fans, and the entire environment made my arrival easy and gave me great trust. That is why I am very happy to continue my path here. I believe that together we can achieve a lot and I want to contribute to ensuring that Union is successful in the future as well. For me, this contract extension is a sign of mutual appreciation and I am very happy about it,” said Ilić on the announcement of his new deal.
Horst Heldt, managing director of men's professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, is also happy at the contract. “Andrej has quickly developed into an important part of our team. He possesses the qualities that characterise a modern striker: presence, assertiveness, goal threat, and at the same time the willingness to work for the team. With his performances, he has earned the trust of the club. That is why we are very pleased that we can continue on this path together and rely on him in the long term.”
