Away Trip to the End of the Reublic
Union's Women Travel to Freiburg
The women of 1. FC Union Berlin will embark on the longest trip of the season this weekend when they play SC Freiburg on SaturdayKick off in the Dreisamstadion is at 12:00.
The lie of the land
SC Freiburg lost 4-1 at home to FC Bayern München last weekend. Though Freiburg pulled level, the league leaders scored three unanswered goals in the second half.
Union, on the other hand, will be looking to shake off the bitter 2-1 home defeat against the bottom side, FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Despite their dominance on the pitch, and a surplus of chances, it was ultimately the visitors who scored the late winning goal in stoppage time.
Seventh placed Freiburg are currently in among a group that still harbour hopes for third place and with it participation in the Champions League qualifying round. Third placed Hoffenheim are only three points ahead of them going into this weekend. If Freiburg were to end up in third place, it would match their best finish - from 2017/18.
Head coach Edmond Kapllani, who has been on the touchline since last summer, faces a new challenge in the second half of the season: coping with the departure of Aurélie Csillag. The forward had only just transferred from FC Basel to Freiburg in the summer, contributing four goals and one assist in the first half of the season. After only half a year in Breisgau, however, the 24-year-old Swiss international moved to the English relegation candidates FC Liverpool in January.
However, SC Freiburg remain well stocked in attack. Both Csillag's compatriots Leela Egli and Svenja Fölmli, as well as summer signing Luca Birkholz, have both been excellent so far. Egli has five goals and three assists in the Bundesliga, Fölmli has sfour and three in eleven matches, while Birkholz is the team's top scorer with five goals and four assists this season.
The only competitive game between the teams came in the first half of the current season. Freiburg won 3-0.
In Eileen Campbell, Samantha Steuerwald, Julia Kassen, and Judith Steinert, four players in the Union squad have a past at SC Freiburg. While Steinert joined Union in 2024, Campbell and Steuerwald arrived last summer. Kassen, on the other hand, arrived at tin Köpenick, first via FC Carl Zeiss Jena.
The coaching staff will have to do without the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Nele Bauereisen, Jenny Hipp, Korina Janež, Mariann Noack, and Tomke Schneider on Saturday.
"In Freiburg, we are facing a strong team that consistently look to create behind the opponent's lines. We want to be aggressive, go into challenges, and create our own chances through regaining possession," said head coach Ailien Poese ahead of the match.
Tickets for the game are available at the SC Freiburg ticket shop or at the box office (box office surcharge of €2.00 per ticket). The Dreisamstadion is located directly in a residential area. Due to resident zones, there are almost no parking spaces available. Therefore, SC Freiburg recommend using park & ride services or the parking spaces of the neighboring University of Education (PH).
The match will be broadcast live in germany on DAZN and MagentaSport. Union will provide updtes in German on the live ticker about the match events, and in English on twitter. As ever, a comprehensive English-only match report will be published after the final whistle
