With the Deepest Gratitude

The Women's Team Bid Six Farewell

Before the last home game of the 2025/2026 season, for many at 1. FC Union Berlin, it's once again time to say goodbye. Four players, one coach, and the manager will leave the women’s team at the end of the season. All of them have left their mark, and been a huge contribution to a historic first season in the Bundesliga.

Players, Celine Frank, Athanasia Moraitou, Fatma Şakar, and Julia Kassen will leave 1. FC Union Berlin, alongside co-coach Sabrina Eckhoff and fitness coach Marcus Liebig. Head coach Ailien Poese will remain with the club but will take on the position of head coach of the girls academy at the TZO.

Celine Frank has been playing for Union since the summer of 2014, with only a brief interruption for a year abroad in Australia. She was the longest-serving Union player in the squad after captain Lisa Heiseler, with whom she played in the U-17s and stepped up to the first team with after one year. In Frank's debut season with the women, she achieved promotion to the 2. Bundesliga Nord and won the Berlin Cup.

After many years in the Regionalliga, the professionalisation of the women's team followed in the 2023/2024 season. Frank embraced this path and was a pillar of the promotion team that season. With eight goals in 23 matches, Union's number 6 repeatedly demonstrated her goal-scoring threat. Even in the 2. Bundesliga, the native Berliner was among the key players, playing 25 out of 29 competitive matches and scoring three times. Frank scored in the 6-1 home victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which marked the first Bundesliga promotion in the club's history. The 27-year-old made her Bundesliga debut on matchday 6 against 1. FC Köln. Four more matches in the top tier were to follow.

Celine Frank bids farewell after 112 competitive matches, 25 goals, three promotions, and two Berlin Cup victories for the first women's team.

Greek international Athanasia Moraitou transferred from SV Meppen to 1. FC Union Berlin as the first summer arrival for the 2023/2024 season, She quickly integrated herself into the team both on the pitch as a key player, becoming indispensible immediately, and off it as a valued member of the team council. In her debut season, Moraitou appeared in 20 matches, starting all of them and scoring seven goals. Her first year at Union was crowned with promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and winning the Berlin Cup.

In her second year, the Waiblingen native was also indispensable in Union's midfield. In the first competitive match of the season, the first-round DFB Pokal cup-tie against Gütersloh, she equalised with a direct free kick and set up the lead for her compatriot Eleni Markou. The 29-year-old played in 29 competitive matches, scoring twice and providing four assists. The season was crowned with the second division championship and promotion to the Bundesliga. She has made six top flight appearances this season so far, as well as two more in the DFB Pokal.

After 57 competitive matches and nine goals, Moraitou's chapter here ends with two championships, two promotions, and one Berlin Cup victory.

Fatma Şakar signed in winter 2024, quickly showing why she was brought to Köpenick. With her speed, determination, and crossing ability, the wing-back always posed a threat from the right. In the second half of the season, Union's number 24 scored twice in nine matches, as well as getting an assist in each leg of the two 2. Liga play-off matches against Henstedt-Ulzburg.

In the 2. Bundesliga, the Karlsruhe-born Şakar initially continued as a regular starter and made her way into the sights of the Turkish national team for whom she made her debut on 29.10.2024 against Ukraine. However, she was hampered by injuries in the following months, leaving her largely unable to contribute on the pitch. The 27-year-old has made one Bundesliga appearance this season, coming on in the 3-3 draw against VfL Wolfsburg.

As a two-time promotion hero, Fatma Şakar will always hold a place in the hearts of the Unioner. After 29 matches and two goals, her time at Union comes to an end.

Goalkeeper, Julia Kassen transferred FC Carl Zeiss Jena to 1. FC Union Berlin in January, taking on the role of supporter of, and challenger to Cara Bösl and Nadine Böhi. She had already worked with goalkeeping coach Alisa Vetterlein from her previous stint in Wolfsburg. With her ambition in training and positive attitude, the former German junior international integrated seamlessly into the goalkeeper trio. The 23-year-old gained match experience in friendlies, as with the U-23s.

After half a year at Union, Julia Kassen will continue her career elsewhere starting in the summer.

As a very experienced assistant coach, who served as interim head at VfL Wolfsburg, the addition of Sabrina Eckhoff proved a big strengthening for Ailien Poese's coaching team this season. The holder of the UEFA Pro License won numerous titles at Wolfsburg, and as such knows the Bundesliga very well. In Union's inaugural season in the German top flight, Eckhoff contributed to their early survival, four matchdays before the end , and to the best season a promoted team has enjoyed in the last 19 years. In the post-Christmas table, 1. FC Union Berlin are currently in sixth, and have already collected six points more than in the first half of the season, with two games to play.

After overseeing 28 competitive matches on the sidelines, Sabrina Eckhoff's time at 1. FC Union Berlin now comes to an end.

Marcus Liebig moved from Turbine Potsdam to 1. FC Union Berlin as athletic trainer in 2023, the graduate sports scientist taking over responsibility for the physical performance of the players. His duties included planning and implementing strength and endurance training, managing workloads, performance diagnostics, injury prevention, and much more. His term included the second division championship in 2024, the victory in the Berliner Pokal 2024, and promotion to the Bundesliga in 2025.

After 72 competitive matches in the coaching team, Marcus Liebig now leaves Köpenick.

Thank you for your commitment – you are a part of Union history

Celine Frank, Athanasia Moraitou, Fatma Şakar, Julia Kassen, Sabrina Eckhoff and Marcus Liebig were all part of Union's historic first Bundesliga season, and four of them have even been promoted with the team twice, going all the way from the Regionalliga to the Bundesliga. For their commitment, their passion, and the many shared moments, Union would like to say thank you in bidding farewell to all six, while also honouring head coach Ailien Poese before the home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim with the respect she deserves.
