Aim to Remain Unbeaten Away in 2026
Union's Women Travel to Frankfurt to End the Season
In the final game of their first season in the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga, 1. FC Union Berlin's women's team will travel to play SG Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Kick off in the Stadion am Brentanobad is at 14:00.
The lie of the land
After four consecutive wins, Eintracht had to face defeat last Saturday in the Bundesliga when they went down 2-0 at home to FC Bayern München.
Union, meanwhile, also lost their last home game - by the same scoreline - against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Almost 14,000 people were in attendance at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, meaning that over 100,000 people had attended a single club's games in German women's football in a season for the first time.
There is still plenty at stake on the last match day for an Eintracht side, currently in the third Champions League spot, but with only two or three points advantage over Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. A fifth consecutive third-placed finish is therefore by no meanms a given.
Niko Arnautis' side finished the first half of the season in sixth place, but SGE have significantly improved since the turn of the year. They are the second best side of 2026 so far, behind Bayern. They have proved their strength at home particularly, only dropping points in the Stadion am Brentanobad during the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Köln and the 5-0 loss to Bayern.
Although their final place in the table is not yet clear, the first two notable transfers for the upcoming season have already been announced. Larissa Mühlhaus, currently tied at the top of the top-scorer's list with 16 goals, will be moving to the Main from Bremen, along with German international, Paulina Krumbiegel, from Juventus. Eintracht also announced four departures for the end of the season during the week. Key players Elisa Senß, Nicole Anyomi, Geraldine Reuteler, and Nadine Riesen will leave.
When the two sides met in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, it ended 2-2, with Union twice coming back from behind. First, Samantha Steuerwald scored, before Jenny Hipp converted a rebounded penalty in the 89th minute. The first encounter between the teams took place in the DFB Pokal round of 16 a year earlier. Union, then still in the second division, put up a strong fight, but conceded two goals shortly before the end of regular time.
On Sunday, five Union players will return to their old workplace – either as players or from the stands. Anna Aehling (2022–2025), Cara Bösl (2012–2024), Leonie Köster (2020–2023), Tanja Pawollek (2016–2025), and Tomke Schneider (2020–2024) all once wore the jersey of Eintracht.
On the opposite side, Eleni Markou celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga with Union last season.
Ailien Poese's coaching staff will have to do without the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Jenny Hipp, Korina Janež, Athanasia Moraitou, Mariann Noack, Dina Orschmann, Tanja Pawollek, and Tomke Schneider on Sunday.
“We want to invest everything last time to finish this season with a success in Frankfurt. We are aware that Eintracht are still aiming for the Champions League. We are preparing for that in order to make our mark together,” said Union head coach, Ailien Poese, looking ahead to the season finale.
Tickets for the match are available in the online shop of Eintracht Frankfurt.
The match will be broadcast live in Germany on DAZN and MagentaSport, and in the UK and many other territories on DAZN. Union will provide live updates on twitter in English, and on the club's live ticker, in german. As ever, a comprehensive, English-only match report will be published on the Union website after the final whistle.
