A Big Sunday at the Alte Försterei

Last Home Game of the Season for Union's Women

1. FC Union Berlin's women's team's debut Bundesliga season is gradually coming to an end. On Sunday they will host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in their last home game of this season, as well as using the occasion to honour the players and staff who will be leaving the club. Kick off at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is at 16:00.

The lie of the land
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim faced FC Bayern München during the week, causing the German champions to drop points for only the second time this season. Having been 1-0 up for a long period on Wednesday evening, Hoffenheim ultimately had to settle for a point after Bayern equalised in the 89th minute.

Union, meanwhile, celebrated May 1st at the Volksparkstadion with a 1-0 win over Hamburger SV. Amber Tysiak scored the only goal of the match with her first in an Union shirt. However, the win was also largely down to the performance of goalkeeper, Cara Bösl, who kept a clean sheet with numerous spectacular saves.

Hoffenheim are currently enjoying one of the strongest seasons in their 13-year Bundesliga history. Even if third place and a repeat of 2020 and 2021's Champions League qualification, seems out of reach, Hoffenheim are at least the third-best away team in the league with 22 points from twelve matches. Their home form - seventh overall - has let them down.

Centre-forward Selina Cerci is once again in the spotlight. The 25-year-old, who shared the coveted top-scorers trophy last season with Lineth Beerensteyn last season (16 goals each), has now taken the lead in this year's scoring chart with her opener against Bayern. The german international has also already provided seven assists, putting her level with Pernille Harder from Bayern at the top of the combined goals and assists list.

Eva-Maria Virsinger has been head coach since January, having previously worked for five years as an assistant coach and scout at VfL Wolfsburg. The 31-year-old had to cope with the departure of key player Melissa Kössler early on, who contributed goals or assists in ten matches in the first half of the season but moved to the USA in the winter.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim beat Union 3-0 at home earlier in the season, the first time the sides have ever met.

Three Union players will face their former club on Sunday. Judith Steinert played 128 competitive matches for Hoffenheim between 2013 and 2022. Fatma Şakar appeared in 69 second division matches for their U-23 team from 2016 to 2020, while Naika Reissner was also active for their U-23s of TSG in 2021/22 making twelve second division appearances.

Union'scoaching staff will have to do without the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Marina Georgieva, Korina Janež, Athanasia Moraitou, Mariann Noack, Dina Orschmann, Tanja Pawollek, and Tomke Schneider on Sunday.

“We have worked very well in recent weeks and therefore feel prepared for the game," said Ailien Poese, preparing for her last ever home game as Union head coach. "Hoffenheim are a team that can be dangerous, play quickly up front, and are aggressive. For us, it’s important to continue to be disciplined in defence, take our opportunities going forward, and put in everything to turn the match in our favour. We want to enjoy the last home game of the season.”

“Playing in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is not easy; we can expect a great atmosphere. We can look forward to that. Union are not an ordinary promoted team, especially with the transfers they have made before this season. A lot of power is coming our way! They have found and established themselves, playing a really good second half  with significantly more points, even though they haven’t won every close result,” said TSG head coach Eva-Maria Virsinger.

The Stadion An der Alten Försterei opens its gates and the box office at 14:00. For the last home game of the season, Union are offering a special ticket promotion. Further information can be found here.

There are still extensive traffic disruptions in public transport, and access via the tram routes “Altstadt Köpenick” is only possible with the replacement bus service. Therefore, all visitors are advised to arrive early.

The match will be broadcast live on DAZN in Germany and the UK, and MagentaSport. Union will provides updates on the match through a club live ticker, as well as updates in English on Twitter. As ever, a comprehensive, English-only match report will be published after the final whistle
