Union’s Women Travel to Leipzig

On Sunday, 03.09.2023, the women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin will meet RasenBallsport Leipzig II in their 3rd game of the Regionalliga Nordost season. Kick-off at the Gontardweg sports complex in Leipzig is at 13:00

The Opponents

If you judge the top teams in the Regionalliga Nordost, last year's Berlin-based top trio Viktoria, Union and Türkiyemspor go almost without saying, but to their number should be included RasenBallsport Leipzig II. The U-20 team, who have been playing in the Regionalliga since 2020, finished behind Türkiyem’ in 4th last season.

Head coach Paul Nürnberger's side had been particularly convincing after Christmas, not only picking up the same amount of points as Türkiyemspor, but also in beating the eventual champions, Viktoria, 2-1. Accordingly, Leipzig II should not be dismissed out of hand in the fight for the title, especially since they are now eligible for promotion due to their first women's team’s promotion to the Bundesliga.

Contrary to expectations, however, Leipzig have started the season badly, having played two and lost two; the first a 3-0 loss to Türkiyemspor, and then, more surprisingly, 1-0 at home to Bischofswerdaer FV. This all only means they will more determined to pick up their first points of the season on Sunday.

The head to head

The two teams have met three times so far, with two wins for Union, and one draw, Union’s victory over them being Leipzig’s only loss in the second half of last season.

Personnel

Head coach Ailien Poese will be without a total of four players on Sunday, Luca Scheel, Lisa Heiseler, Elisa Schindler and Pauline Wimmer.

The view ahead of the game

"We are travelling to Leipzig with great anticipation,” said Union’s head coach, Ailien Poese in midweek. “Our last matches were always hard-fought. In addition, RasenBallsport have failed to score in their first two games, so we have to defend attentively and purposefully against the young and hungry Saxon team and make the most of our scoring opportunities when they arise."
