New Deal for Behrens

A few days after his birthday, as well as his goals this week against Wolfsburg and Mainz, Kevin Behrens now has something else to celebrate, with an extension to his contract with 1. FC Union Berlin.

Dangerous in the air, and a knack for scoring at just the right moment

In a solid first season with Union (scoring six with four further assists), Behrens earned a reputation as being the man for the important goals. Against both Arminia Bielefeld and RB Leipzig, "Behre" scored with practically the final touch of the game, securing two important victories.

The 32-year-old Bremen-born target man moved from SV Sandahusen in the summer of 2021, quickly showing the nerves of steel he would need to establish himself in the Bundesliga as well as in Europe.

Against Maccabi Haifa at the Olympiastadion he was instrumental in a 3-0 UEFA Conference League win with a goal and an assist, and in the DFB Pokal he scored a brace against Waldhof Mannheim in extra time to secure further participation in the tournament.

He is in fine form at the moment, scoring in the wins against Bremen and Wolfsburg in the cup, as well as scoring the opener against Mainz on Saturday.

His hard work pays off

This was never enough for Behrens, and he has continued to work hard on his game, with some success. After 27 appearances so far this season "Behre" has now six goals and two assists to his name in all competitions. He is a constant danger, especially in  the air, whether with his back to goal or looming in the box. Behrens is currently Union’s second top scorer in the league.

The views on the extension

Behrens, himself, says he’s happy about the extension, and wants to continue to give everything for the club. "I feel very comfortable here,” he said. “You can see this on the pitch. Both the coach and the team give me the feeling that i won’t regret extending my contract here. I want to continue on my path with Union and I’m convinced that we’ve still got a lot in front of us."

"His performances and his attitude mean that an extension with Kevin makes perfect sense,” said Oliver Ruhnert, director of professional football at Union. “We are very happy that he’ll continue to help us with his physicality and his strength in the air.”
