The Opponent Check
With SG Dynamo Dresden, 1. FC Union Berlin faces a true traditional club. The sports community was founded in 1953 and is one of the most successful clubs in the history of GDR football. After promotion from the third division, the Saxons have been playing in the 2. Bundesliga again since the 2025/26 season, finishing the last season in eleventh place.
On Saturday, there could also be a reunion with some former Unioners, as there are three familiar faces in the Dresden squad. Goalkeeper Daniel Mesenhöler was under contract with the Eisernen from 2016 to 2018 and played a total of 26 competitive matches, Lennart Grill wore the Eisernen jersey in eight matches between 2022 and 2025, and teammate Nicolai Rapp was also part of the 1. FC Union Berlin squad in 2019 before moving on loan to SV Darmstadt 98.
“After a week off, we are looking forward to being back together on the pitch. The team has used the free days to recharge, and now we need to quickly find our rhythm again. As in the previous matches, we want to further solidify our processes, grow together as a team, and give every player important playing minutes. The focus is clearly on the development of the team,” explains head coach Mauro Lustrinelli.
