"Winter, Mollig warm" is Another Great Success
Under the long-known motto "Winter, Mollig warm," the fan and membership department of 1. FC Union Berlin, together with the "UNION VEREINT. Schulter an Schulter" foundation, the fan project Streetwork Alte Försterei, and the Economic Council of 1. FC Union e. V., once again put out a call for clothing and material donations for needy and homeless people in Berlin around Union's home game against SV Elversberg.
On collection days around the men's home game, the Unioner once again demonstrated what solidarity means. Numerous fans responded to the call and brought warm, well-preserved clothing and urgently needed everyday items. Some donations even arrived in Berlin by plane from abroad. It wasn't just the fans though, many people without a direct connection to the club also supported the initiative.
After the final whistle drew the men's 1-0 home win to a close, the real work began in the fan house where about 30 volunteers reviewed, sorted, and packaged the donations received until late in the evening. The results of the initiative, which was first conducted in 2017, of which they can be rightly proud.
More than 100 bags full of warm men's clothing were collected. This included 324 jackets, 547 sweaters, 284 pairs of trousers, and 475 pairs of socks, as well as numerous hats, scarves, and winter-appropriate shoes. In total, 2,847 urgently needed items were donated.
Of particular value for people who have to spend the cold season on the street are the over 40 cold protection kits, including sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and tents. Functioning mobile phones, including chargers, were also accepted. The collection was supplemented by numerous hygiene items and cash donations totaling around €600.
Already on the following Monday, the transporters set off after the counting to distribute the aid goods to 13 Berlin facilities, emergency accommodations, and street projects.
The following institutions were supported:
