Toni Mandl's team battled impressively to a 0-0 draw against Leipzig in the last U19 Bundesliga matchday. Union were strong defensively and equally threatening from fast counterattacking situations. The Köpenick club played the final few minutes with 10 men after Maurice Opfermann Arcones was dismissed. Nevertheless, Union held out with a resolute defensive showing.

"The simple pre-requisite for success in Hamburg will be defensive stability," said Mandl. "Building on that, we will seek our own cutting edge with the ball."

Hamburg beat TSV Havelse last time around by four goals to one and lie sixth in the table.
