Despite being a player down for a long time:
Fighting Union secures a point in Augsburg
With a committed performance, the men's professional team of 1. FC Union Berlin secured a point in Augsburg despite a long period of being a man down. Following the red cards shown to Felix Uduokhai (19.) and Juma Bah (63.), Han-Noah Massengo (71.) and Janik Haberer (74.) ensured the goals for the final score.

Attendance: 33,660
Goals: 1-0 Massengo (71.), 1-1 Haberer (74.)
Few chances – Union down to ten men early.
Without any highlights in terms of play, but with a longer injury break and an ensuing early substitution for the hosts, the match in Augsburg began. Union's first attempt on goal by Tim Skarke in the seventeenth minute ended with a low shot hitting the side netting; however, the ensuing excitement quickly faded when Felix Udookhai had to leave the field two minutes later after a last-man foul against Michael Gregoritsch, receiving a red card.
Following this and with the prospect of at least seventy minutes of playing in a numerical advantage, the home side increasingly took control of the match and pushed the Eisernen deep into their own half. The team led by head coach Mauro Lustrinelli, on the other hand, switched to a defensive five-man backline with the substitution of Leopold Querfeld and increasingly focused on counter-attacks.
By the halftime whistle, there had been eleven attempts on goal from the FCA, two of which found their way to the iron goal, but the defense led by Frederik Rönnow dealt with them effectively.
FCA leads despite red card – Iron quickly equalize deficit
With an unchanged course of play, the second half also began: The hosts sent wave after wave of attacks towards the Köpenick penalty area, which remained firmly closed and impenetrable.
From minute sixty-three, the Fuggerstadt players also acted with one less field player. Juma Bah's rough foul on Andrés Schäfer left referee Robin Braun no choice but to show the red card in this situation as well.
Despite the setback, the hosts managed to score their first goal of the match moments later with the first real chance. A cross from Fabian Rieder was deflected by Han-Noah Massengo into the short corner, leaving Rönnow helpless (71).
To make the already bizarre course of the game even more unusual, the Eisernen also took their first shot at goal through Janik Haberer to equalize just three rotations of the clock later. Following a free kick from deep, the FCA defense failed to clear the ball sufficiently, allowing Mekhi Gray, Leopold Querfeld, and ultimately Janik Haberer to push it over the line with determination.
The match was now on a different energy level than for long stretches before, with both teams looking for a way forward with more intensity and registering further chances here and there. The attempts from substitute Mert Kömür (80) and Anton Kade (81) again found their way into the side netting, and Michael Gregoritsch also missed the chance to give FCA the lead again after a cross from Fellhauer in minute eighty-seven with a direct shot.
Further chances were not to be seen by the spectators, so the match ultimately ended with 1-1.
Voices after the game
“When you receive a red card so early, what we showed afterwards was a great display of morale. Then we concede the goal, but then we score ourselves and get back up. I am very happy to have scored again. Overall, our game looks very solid now, and we need to stay on track,” is the assessment of Janik Haberer.
“When you play with fewer players for such a long time and then concede a goal, it's quite bitter. The result is therefore all the more justified. We are standing as a team more compactly again and have also been a unit for several weeks now; everyone fights for each other,” said Rani Khedira afterwards.
“The team showed incredible solidarity. Playing for a long time against a strong home team is not easy. Even after the conceded goal, the players showed character, which I am proud of. Now it is important to continue working on bringing our performance onto the pitch, regardless of the circumstances,” assesses Mauro Lustrinelli the match.
