Union Sign Tomke Schneider
U23 International Moves to the Capital
The women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin have made a further reinforcement with the signing of Tomke Schneider. The 20-year-old centre back is moving to Union from Eintracht Frankfurt II.
Defensive talent with extensive 2. Liga experience
In her native Bavaria, Tomke Schneider started out playing in the male junior teams of SV Viktoria Aschaffenburg until she was 16 years old until, in the summer of 2020, she finally made the step up to the women's team at Eintracht Frankfurt II. There, in her very first season, she impressed as a regular in the 2. Bundesliga, playing 16 games in which she scored three goals. However, she then missed almost the entire 2021/22 season due to a lengthy injury. After her recovery, Schneider was once again part of the core of the U20 team from 2022 and made 61 second-division appearances for SGE.
In the current season, the defender has played seven times for Eintracht Frankfurt II, among them the full 90 minutes in Union’s only league defeat so far in 2024/25, Frankfurt II’s 2-1 win at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Shortly before the winter break, Schneider also made her debut for the current Bundesliga-leader Eintracht’s first team, but did not make it onto the pitch against RasenBallsport Leipzig and Carl Zeiss Jena.
At international level, Schneider has played for almost all of Germany’s junior national teams from the U15s up, representing her country 15 times. She made her debut for the U23 national team about a month ago.
Three facts about Tomke
- In September 2024, Schneider was in action at the U20 World Cup in Colombia. She played the full 90 minutes in four of the five matches.
- Frankfurt II remained unbeaten in all her seven league appearances this season.
- Schneider was teammates at SGE with Union goalkeeper Cara Bösl as well as fellow winter newcomer Leonie Köster.
The views on the transfer
“When I played here at the Alte Försterei a few weeks ago, I was very impressed and so am all the more pleased to be able to play in front of such a crowd at every home game in the future,” said Scheider on her move to Union. “Union are ambitious and offers young players very good prospects. I want to continue on the path we have taken with the team and play a strong second half of the season.”
“I'm very happy that we were able to sign Tomke, a member of the U23 national team and one of the best defenders of her age group,” commented Union’s director of women’s professional football, Jennifer Zietz, on the signing. “She has already gained experience in the 2. Bundesliga and at international tournaments. We are convinced that she will further strengthen our defence and has great potential.”
