Union run wild. Five goals in 15 minutes
As expected, Union took control of the game against the Swiss second division team from the start, dominating the ball and their opponents with their superior possession. The first goal chance came after eleven minutes, when Leonie Köster crossed to Lisa Heiseler after a short corner, whose header flew just over the bar. Seven minutes later, Athanasia Moraitou aimed just wide of the opposing goal from the edge of the box.
It was coming, and duly enough, before 20 minutes had been played, the ball was in the Schlieren net for the first time. Naika Reissner broke through on the left and her low cross into the six-yard box found Dina Orschmann, who only had to nudge the ball in from close range.
In the 26th minute, Moraitou tested Schlieren goalkeeper Annina Eigenmann with a long-range shot, which she safely parried aside. A few seconds later, the hosts’ relentless pressing saw the ball won in the penalty area, but though Heiseler rounded the goalkeeper, her shot on the half-empty goal was still decisively blocked by an opposing defender.
She wouldn’t pass up the next chance. In the 31st minute the captain took a pass from Orschmann, and shot the ball first time into the bottom corner.
Union were now all over Schlieren, and four more goals were to follow before half-time. In the 36th minute, Heiseler and Korina Janez both chased a through ball towards the opposing goal, and the skipper unselfishly crossed for her Slovenian teammate, who confidently finished to make it 3-0. Three minutes later, Moraitou played a through ball to Reissner, who made it 4-0 from a tight angle. In the 45th minute, Heiseler scored the fifth goal after a cross from Judith Steinert before, two minutes later, Union's number 7 made it half a dozen with her third, taking it to 6-0 as the referee brought the half to a close.
Union carry on where they left off, scoring seven more
After the break, the good crowd at Dörpfeldstraße saw a repeat of the first half as Union continued their relentless pursuit of the next goal. Three minutes after the restart, Reissner crossed for Orschmann, whose goal came just a few seconds before Celine Frank made it 8-0, marking another assist from the unplayable Reissner.
But if it all seemed a little too forgone a conclusion by this point, there were moments to light up the day even further. In the 52nd minute, Ida Heikkinen scored her first ever goal in a Union jersey. After a pass from Frank, the Finn made it 9-0.
Five minutes later, Pia Metzker also got on the scoresheet, following up on the rebound after Frank had hit the post from range.
After an eleven-minute period without a goal, the longest stretch in the second half, Dina Orschmann made it 11-0 in the 67th minute after being set up by Antonia Halverkamps.
As if that wasn’t enough, there was a smile on everyone’s faces when Sarah Abu Sabbah made her comeback in the 70th minute after several months out with injury.
But though Abu didn’t make the scoresheet, her teammates weren’t done. In the 76th minute, Metzker finally made it a dozen before the 21-year-old bagged her third goal in the 84th minute, and thus joining Heiseler and Orschmann on hat-tricks, by running onto a bad pass from goalkeeper Luana Ruggieri and rolling the ball into the empty goal.
The views on the game
“The 13-0 win feels good, of course,” said triple-goalscorer, Pia Metzker, after the final whistle. “I think we were able to maintain the pace of the game relatively well throughout. In the first 15 minutes, it might have taken a little while for us to get into it. But then the first goals were scored, the dam opened, and the game went in the right direction for us.”
Her head coach, Ailien Poese, too, was happy with the performance, if careful not to lose her head over the win. “Generally speaking, we can be very satisfied with our preparations. We were able to address many aspects that were still a bit problematic in the first half of the season. Today we had an opponent who didn't have that much possession, but we still managed to create chances and, above all, take advantage of them. That was definitely the goal. At the beginning of the game, we were a bit too slow, but we got into it more and more. We've had two matches in which we were challenged defensively, now, today the challenge was a bit more attacking, and we did well in general. Accordingly, we are now looking forward to next week with great anticipation.”
