The Women Hit Franconia

With the conclusion of the international break, 1. FC Union Berlin’s women’s team will be back in 2. Bundesliga action again this coming Sunday, 2 March 2025as they travel to play SV 67 Weinberg. Kick off at the Sachsen Erlbachweg sports complex is at 14:00.

The lie of the land

SV 67 Weinberg are still waiting for their first point in a competitive game this year, having lost 1-0 at home to SV Meppen and 4-2 away at SG 99 Andernach. In the first half of the season, however, Weinberg had won both these fixtures and were top of the table heading into the clash with Union on matchday 3. They are currently 10th.

Union, meanwhile, got 2025 off to a perfect start in competition. After the hard-fought 2-1 away win that kicked off the second half of the season at Hamburger SV, came a brilliant 4-0 win at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei two weeks ago against league leaders 1. FC Nürnberg. This victory means that they are currently sitting just one point behind them and top spot.

The opponents

Weinberg, who only avoided relegation to the Regionalliga this summer because MSV Duisburg withdrew from the competition, have had an average season so far. After a very good start, with nine points from their first four games, the team gradually slid into the relegation battle in the weeks leading up to the winter break. Though they did manage to pull off an impressive victory in November, beating promotion contenders VfL Bochum 2-1, but since then Weinberg have lost five league games in a row. The gap to the relegation places is now just two points.

Coach Christina Schellenberg, in charge of the club since 2023, has significant problems, particularly at the back. With 32 goals conceded, Weinberg have the second-weakest defence in the league after FSV Gütersloh 2009’s 38. When an underwhelming attack, with just 14 goals, is considered, this gives Weinberg, along with FC Bayern Munich II and bottom-of-the-table SC Freiburg II, the weakest goal difference in the league on -18.

However, SV Weinberg have picked up 11 of their 14 points at home, putting them eighth in the home table and, in this respect, level on points with Hamburger SV, for example.

The head to head

The last time the sides met, Union beat the then league leaders 2-0 in commanding fashion. Lisa Heiseler scored the opening goal in injury time of the first half against their deep-lying opponents. In the second half, Sarah Abu Sabbah made the game safe after 67 minutes. In the final stages, Union let several opportunities slip by to make the result even clearer.

The personnel

On Sunday, Union's head coach Ailien Poese will have to do without Maria-Cristina Lange, Leonie Köster, Sophie Trojahn, Tomke Schneider and Marie Becker.

The views ahead of the game

“We are looking forward to getting back into competitive action after the international break,” said an expectant Union head coach, Ailien Poese, looking at the task ahead of her charges. “On Sunday, we expect a very compact and strong opponent who skilfully close the space again and again and who can be dangerous on the break. Our plan is to defend just as aggressively and to create good opportunities to score goals and to take advantage of them.
