Urs Fischer extends contract until 2021

1. FC Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer has signed a new contract at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which now runs until June 2021 and is valid for Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga.

Fischer's first contract was for two seasons, but following the historic promotion success and start in the Bundesliga, his deal is extended by a further year.

"We were sure that Urs Fischer would fill the position of head coach in the summer of 2018. This success has already occurred in the first year and an agreement, which has been characterized by mutual respect and trust has gone on to develop quickly," said Union President Dirk Zingler. "Urs Fischer has got involved with Union and our fans feel something like this very clearly. We hope that our shared path will continue to be successful."

The Swiss coach took charge of the club at the start of the previous season. Fischer enjoyed championship success at FC Basel with experience in European competition. His first season with the Köpenick club led to an historical feat of acheiving the club's first promotion to the Bundesliga as third-placed finishers with a play-off win over VfB Stuttgart.

"I came to Union with a very good feeling at the time and my positive expectations were clearly exceeded. The cohesion in this club, the way it cooperates with the various boards and staff and the support from the fans are really extraordinary. It is great fun to work here and to pursue these ambitious goals together. I'm very much looking forward to continuing to contribute to future success here at Union Berlin," said coach Fischer.

"Our cooperation worked out really, really well. It was focused on targets and successful. Of course we want to continue along this successful path. I'm delighted that Urs Fischer will stay with the club beyond this season," added Oliver Ruhnert, Director for Professional Football at 1. FC Union Berlin.
