At the start of every season since 1980, the editors of Union’s matchday program have cast their eyes back to the previous year, curating a vote among fans for the Unioner of the Year.

Votes were based on our footballing heroes season's on-pitch performances in 2021/22, and not for all the Union players who put in outstanding achievements off it.

And now - after Max Kruse won the vote last summer - Union captain Christopher Trimmel has secured the longstanding and coveted title of Unioner of the Year for the second time.

The Austrian-born player moved from Rapid Vienna to Union in the summer of 2014 and has so far played 269 competitive games in the famous red and white stripes. Union supporters first voted him Unioner of the Year two years ago.

Before today's match against Leipzig Trimmi will be presented with his award, and can take a brief moment to enjoy the well-deserved adoration of the Alte Försterei.

Second place goes to Grischa Prömel, who now plays for TSG Hoffenheim, and third place to Robin Knoche.
