Union travel to face Fürstenwalde

Union Fürstenwalde are Union Berlin's third opponents of the season as the preparations for the new league campaign continue. The Köpenick club travel to the Bonava Arena for an 18:30 kick-off this Thursday.

The games are coming thick and fast for Urs Fischer's new-look side following Sunday's draw with Carl Zeiss Jena and Wednesday's test against Chemnitzer FC. After the back-to-back games, Fischer and his players will leave for a 10-day training camp in Klosterpforte.

Landesliga to Regionalliga: Fürstenwalde's quick rise

Local clubs FSV Wacker Fürstenwalde and SG Union Fürstenwalde merged to create a more economically-viable model and give the best opportunities to players in the Brandenburg region.

Until the best part of a decade ago, Fürstenwalde were competing in the sixth division before eventually rising up into the Oberliga, the fifth tier. They were promoted to the fourth-tier in 2016 and have since achieved 13th and ninth-placed finishes in the Regionalliga. With their new coach Andre Meyer, they will be keen to continue that development.

Meyer is one of several connections between 1. FC Union Berlin and Union Fürstenwalde. The coach was previously in Köpenick, taking charge of the U14 to U17 groups. On the pitch, Ingo Wunderlich, Ben Florian Meyer and Gian Luca Schulz all earned their stripes as youth players at Union.

Union Fürstenwalde play at the Bonava-Arena which is located on Hangelsberger Chaussee 6, 15517 Fürstenwalde/Spree. The Köpenick club previously visited in preparation for the 2016/17 season and ran out three-goal winners with efforts from Damir Kreilach and Maximilian Thiel.
