Marc Torrejon, Fabian Schönheim, Eroll Zejnullahu leave Union

1. FC Union Berlin bids farewell to three players at tonight’s celebrations at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, who will all leave the club this summer.

Marc Torrejon signed for the Köpenick club in the summer of 2017 from Freiburg. Torrejon made 25 appearances for the club in central defence.

“I’m really grateful for my time with Union and have experienced a lot of good things here. But I still have the desire to be regularly out on the pitch. That’s why I’m looking for new opportunities,” said the 33-year-old Spaniard.

Fabian Schönheim, one of the current longest-serving players at the club, will bring his association to Union Berlin to an end. The defender arrived from Mainz on loan in the 2012-13 season and signed permanently, 12 months later. Schönheim went on to play 124 games for the club, scoring seven goals during his time in Köpenick.

“For me, an important chapter of my life at Union comes to an end. As a player and a person, I have developed a lot here and I will take many of those lessons forward with me in my career,” commented the 32-year-old.

Also leaving the club this summer is Eroll Zejnullahu, who developed through the club’s youth academy. The midfielder was given his first professional contract in the season 2013/14, going on to play 68 matches for 1. FC Union Berlin. He spent a season on loan in Sandhausen before returning ahead of this new season, but his progress was halted through unfortunate injuries.

“1. FC Union Berlin was for me the first step in my professional career, so the club will always have a special place in my heart. But now is the time for me to face new challenges. I’d like to thank everyone here for the good cooperation,” said the 24-year-old.

Oliver Ruhnert, the club’s Director for Professional Football, gave his best wishes to the three players leaving the club.

“With Marc, Fabian and Eroll, three important players are leaving the club. Even though they haven’t played many matches recently, they were immensely important for the success of the team. Both on the pitch and in the dressing room, they always gave everything to ensure there would be a successful team. The entire club is grateful for that. I wish them every success in their future endeavours,” said the 46-year-old.
