Familiar challenge as Union Berlin travel to Paderborn

1. FC Union Berlin will meet another familiar face on Saturday when Urs Fischer’s team head to fellow promoted side SC Paderborn.

Steffen Baumgartl, who played 68 games for Union between 2004 and 2008, is the head coach of Paderborn and achieved his second promotion with the club last season.

Review: Union’s winning run continues, Köln under pressure

1. FC Union Berlin won their fourth successive home game on Sunday, beating 1. FC Köln 2-0 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Sebastian Andersson powered home from a corner kick on 33 minutes to break the away side’s resistance after a decent start. Fischer’s men took control in the second half and Andersson scored his second, five minutes after the restart. The win saw Union jump above Eintracht Frankfurt and into 10th place, extending the gap to the bottom three to 11 points.

Meanwhile, Sven Michel’s last-minute goal clinched a memorable Bundesliga win for SC Paderborn at Werder Bremen. The club from Westfalen are up to eight points for the season — three goals better off in the relegation battle as Cologne. However, there have been reasons to maintain optimism at the Benteler-Arena with Paderborn running RB Leipzig close recently and leading Borussia Dortmund 3-0 before the Champions League side levelled the scores in the second half. The win over Fortuna Düsseldorf in October is Paderborn’s only home win of the campaign.

Record: Paderborn dominate last encounters, Andersson is an aerial threat

After the meetings last season, Paderborn are unbeaten against Union Berlin in two games. Fischer’s team earned a point at the Benteler-Arena but Paderborn took all three points in Köpenick with an impressive performance. Though Paderborn won in Bremen last week, they have not won any of the last four home matches against Union.

Sebastian Andersson has already scored four headers this season — the same as Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Personnel: Fischer with near-full squad

Union Berlin are still without the services of Grischa Prömel, Akaki Gogia, Laurenz Dehl and Keven Schlotterbeck. Fischer confirmed to the press that the rest of his squad has participated in full training. Neven Subotic missed the win over 1. FC Köln, but the experienced defender has taken the right steps in training this past week.

“We will have a plan on Saturday, which we will look to implement as best as possible,” said Fischer in the press conference on Thursday. “Paderborn are a team with an amazing dynamic in their attacking movement. We need to stay compact for the 90 minutes and make the pitch as tight as possible.”

Service: Sold out away end

Paderborn confirmed on social media that they have sold 14,200 tickets for Saturday’s game. More than 1,700 Union supporters are expected to travel with the entire allocation sold out.
