Dominique Heintz switches to VfL Bochum

After Laurenz Dehl and Keita Endo, another player is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin on loan, with Dominique Heintz going to league rivals VfL Bochum for the rest of the season.

Vital support in the second half of last season

Arriving from Freiburg in the winter, Heintz quickly found himself a vital role within the Union squad. He started the second game after the winter break, and the Rheinland-Palatinate born defender played a key role in the 2-1 win against TSG Hoffenheim.

As a player with a wealth of Bundesliga experience, the 28-year-old was ready to take on extra responsibility towards the end of the season starting in the derby victories, away in the DFB Pokal (3:2), and at home (4:1), as well as in the vital 2-1 away win against Leipzig. Heintz has played a total of nine competitive games for Union so far.

The club’s view on the transfer

"We are in a situation with a lot of competition for places, especially at centre-back,” said Oliver Ruhnert, director of professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, about the loan deal. “For Dominique, the option at VfL came up at very short notice and he really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity because he simply hopes to get more playing minutes there than he can with us. That's the only reason we decided to fulfil his wish."
