Union Berlin lose final game at Odense BK 3-1

The Baltic Sea Cup came to an end on Tuesday as 1. FC Union Berlin lose 3-1 at Danish club Odense BK.

A goal from Fisnik Asllani proved not enough as the Danes came back strongly with three first-half strikes.

1. FC Union Berlin XI: Moser; Alimler (Reinhardt 71), Riecke, Maloney, Veith (Möller 82); Cinar (Maciejewski 62), Inaler, Opfermann-Arcones (Gencel 71); Taz, Asllani (Werner 62), Sitz (Eidtner 62)

Attendance: 103

Referee: Lukas Spielman

After just nine minutes, U17 striker Asllani put the away side ahead, finishing off good work from Leon Sitz. However the joy in the Union Berlin side was short lived as the Danes fought back inside 60 seconds. Julius Eskesen headed past Lennart Moser in the 11th minute before Mads Frokjaer found the net a minute later. Mikkel Michelsen added a third on 33 minutes to give the home side a comfortable advantage in the interval.

Union Berlin performed better in the second half and assistant coach Sebastian Bönig explained his mixed feelings after the game. "We got ourselves into trouble, especially in the first half, by making individual mistakes at the back. We did a better job in the second half and created a few good opportunities to pull one back. But unfortunately it didn't work out," said the 37-year-old who takes responsibility for the transition between our U19 squad and the first-team operations.

"The bottom line is, however, that it was a good test for our young players. They were able to gain some experience at competition level," he added.
