One week after securing their first promotion to The Bundesliga, the women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin face the longest away trip of the season on Sunday with trip to play SC Freiburg II. Kick off at the Möslestadion Freiburg is at 14:00.
The lie of the land
SC Freiburg II came away from their relegation battle six-pointer against second-to-last FSV Gütersloh 2009 with a 4-0 win last Sunday. As a result, the Freiburg women have skipped past Gütersloh and are now in 13th place.
In front of 14,047 spectators, the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin secured promotion to the top flight with a 6-1 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach last Sunday. Although there was jubilation, pride and joy immediately after the match, the players and officials quickly made it clear that the remaining three games should be approached with nothing less than full focus to secure the second division title if possible.
Until two matchdays ago, the situation for SC Freiburg II in the relegation battle looked quite bleak. After losing against direct relegation rivals FC Ingolstadt (0-3) and SG 99 Andernach (0-1), the club found themselves bottom of the table after 21 matchdays with only twelve points. The gap to league safety was seven points, and it seemed as if direct relegation was unavoidable.
However, two weeks ago, they pulled off a surprising 2-1 win over leaders 1. FC Nürnberg. Last weekend, Freiburg followed up with a strong performance in Gütersloh and with it were able to leave the bottom of the table. 11th, the first non-relegation place, is now only three points away. Having been in acute danger since matchday eight, Freiburg II are finally finding form just in time for the end of the season.
Despite the four goals in Gütersloh, Freiburg II, together with SV Weinberg 67, have the weakest attack in the league, with 19 goals. In the SC squad, Almas Traore and Nora Scherer are top scorers, each with three goals this season. In Gütersloh, Austrian national player Eileen Campbell also scored. Originally part of the Bundesliga first team, Following injury, she is now gathering match practice in the reserves.
Defensively, the team under head coach Amin Jungkeit, who has been responsible for the team since 2021, have been solid. With only 38 goals conceded, Freiburg II are looking better than all direct opponents in the relegation battle and are even stronger than promotion-seeking SC Sand, who, despite being in fifth place, have already conceded 45 goals.
In a hard-fought first match this season, in which SC Freiburg II demonstrated their defensive stability, Union’s women ultimately came out 2-0 winners. Antonia Halverkamp broke the deadlock in the 64th minute before Dina Orschmann sealed the victory in injury time (90+4). It was the first meeting between both teams.
Union's head coach Ailien Poese will have to do without Maria Cristina Lange, Leonie Köster, Sophie Trojahn, and Ida Heikkinen on Sunday.
“Freiburg II have shown with their successful recent matches that they are ready to muster all their strength to get everything out of the relegation battle. We are preparing for an active and combative team that we want to attack as well. It will be important to focus on our phases of play and to take our chances.”
