2nd Division Champions Host the Bundesliga Champions

Union's Women Look to Crash Bayern's Party

On Wednesday evening, 1. FC Union Berlin's Women's team are hosting an FC Bayern München side who need one more win to be crowned champions in the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga. Kick off at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei is at 18:00.

The lie of the land
There are barely enough superlatives for this FC Bayern München side. They have failed to win only once in this Bundesliga season, when they drew against bottom team, Jena. Furthermore, they also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the third time in the club's history before the international break.

ButUnion are no shrinking violets. TAilien Poese's side are unbeaten in five and took a point from second-placed VfL Wolfsburg with a 3-3 draw before the international break. During the three-and-a-half-week pause in league operations, the team also played Friendlies against Hertha BSC (3-0) and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (2-0), both of which were won.

That FC Bayern's seventh championship is just a matter of time is beyond question. With a 13-point lead over VfL Wolfsburg, their fourth consecutive title is merely a formality. With this triumph, Bayern would equal the record title holders, 1. FFC Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg.

However, José Barcala's team are harbouring legitimate hopes for further titles. In the Champions League, Bayern have advanced to the semi-finals, and FC Barcelona, after a two-legged victory over Manchester United. It was against gainst Barça, however, that they also suffered their only defeat of the season, 7-1 in the first group match of this Champions League season. They have also already reached the final of the DFB Pokal, where Bayern will face their perennial rivals VfL Wolfsburg.

Bayern have recently had to do without their star player Klara Bühl. The winger, who was involved in 28 goals in 24 matches, has been missing since early March due to a muscle injury. Nevertheless, they have managed to compensate for this absence well so far, through the likes of Pernille Harder, who is the team's top scorer with a total of 24 goals across all competitions and is leading the Bundesliga’s top scorers list alongside Vanessa Fudalla.

Bayern beat Union 4-0 earlier in the season at Bayern-Campus. It was the first competitive match between the two teams.

Leonie Köster was not only born in Munich but also trained by the reigning champions. From 2015 to 2020, she played in Bayern's youth teams as well as the U-20s in the 2. Bundesliga. She became the B-Juniorinnen champion in 2017 with the U-17s, and with the U-20s, she celebrated the second division championship two years later.

Union's coaching team will be without the services of Anna Aehling, Ida Heikkinen, Korina Janež, Leonie Köster, Athanasia Moraitou, Mariann Noack, and Tomke Schneider on Wednesday.

"Bayern are certainly the best team in Germany. We were able to make good use of the international break and are really looking forward to the challenge. The national players are back and we trained together for the first time today. For us, it’s about giving everything against the opponent, and then we are convinced that we can also achieve something,” said head coach Ailien Poese about Wednesday's game

Tickets for the match are available for general sale at all Union-zeughauses as well as online. Parking permits for the spaces in front of the main stand can be purchased online for €8. The Stadion An der Alten Försterei opens its gates and the box office at 16:30. All box office areas are open.

There continue to be extensive traffic disruptions in public transport. Furthermore, Hämmerlingstraße is closed in both directions between Am Bahndamm and Friedenstraße (railway bridge) for motor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. All Unioner are therefore asked to turn into Hämmerlingstraße via Bahnhofstraße and Seelenbinderstraße for the home match on Wednesday.

The match will be broadcast live on DAZN and MagentaSport. In addition, Union provides updates on the match events in their club's own live ticker.
