Practice minutes in Herzogenaurach:
Unions Test hurdle Schweinfurt
The Bundesliga season is approaching, and the minutes played in preparation are becoming more important. For this reason, the men's professional team of 1. FC Union Berlin will test against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 on Tuesday, 29.07.2025, at 15:30. The match will take place at the Adi-Dassler-Stadion on the adidas Home Ground.
The Situation
Six hundred thirty minutes of pure Friendly practice have already been experienced by the players of the third division team from Schweinfurt. In eight matches so far, including against Rot-Weiß Essen, FC Carl Zeiss Jena, and 1. FC Nürnberg, there have been three wins and four losses with a goal difference of 26-13. The Schweinfurt team has also participated in the first round of the Bavarian Association Cup, where the regional league team FC 06 Bad Kissingen posed no significant problem in a 7-1 victory.
Head coach Steffen Baumgart's team is not quite as advanced in preparation, even though the match against the Unterfranken is already the third to last before it gets serious in the DFB-Pokal on 15.08. The 0-1 loss to SpVgg Greuter Fürth last Saturday was their first defeat after three previous victories and a draw.
The "Schnüdel", one of the official nicknames of the Schweinfurt team, were founded in May 1905. The club, long led by the bourgeois middle class, was used to a lot of sporting hustle and bustle in its early years and went through a short merger with TG 1848 Schweinfurt in the early 1920s. With the development into a workers' club from 1930 onwards, both sporting success and the first national players like Robert Bernard, Albin Kitzinger, and Andreas Kupfer came into play for the Bavarian team.
While times with German national players are a long way off nowadays on the Main, the team, under head coach Victor Kleinherz, has recently celebrated its greatest sporting success in many decades with its promotion to the third division. For the first time since the early 2000s, S05 is represented in the highest leagues again and has already made several transfers this summer to ensure that it stays that way. Erik Shuranov, attacking player from Maccabi Haifa, Toni Stahl, former U18 national player at the DFB, and particularly Manuel Wintzheimer, who was already active in the youth of the Schwarz-Rot-Grünen, are expected to strengthen and lead the team in key positions.
Before 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 moved to the Regionalliga after the 2001/2002 season, there were two encounters with the Eisernen: The Unioner were able to win both matches with an overall goal difference of 4-0. The only competitive match in the DFB Pokal ended a year later with a score of 2-1 in favor of the Köpenickers.
Union's coaching team has to do without Livan Burcu, Oluwaseun Ogbemudia, and Stanley Nsoki in the sixth Friendly of the preparation.
“We want to continue building on what we've been working on in training. There will certainly be players on the field who weren’t there against Fürth. Especially before the last two Friendlies, it's important that everyone gets their minutes. We expect a strong promoted team from the opponent, who will be playing in the third division again after a long time, starting this coming weekend. Schweinfurt is therefore already at the end of their preparation. It will be an exciting duel,” said head coach Steffen Baumgart ahead of the match.
Approximately 800 spectators are expected for the match at the Adi-Dassler-Stadion, including 200 Union supporters. Remaining tickets can be purchased at the box office. The Union-Fahr-Zeughaus will also be present on site.
