A Long Trip South
Union face a Hard Test in Freiburg
1. FC Union Berlin will visit the current third placed side in the Bundesliga, SC Freiburg, on Sunday in the league's ninth match day. Kick off in the Europa-Park Stadion, the longest trip for anyone travelling from Berlin in the league, is at 17:30
The lie of the land
Union are travelling to face a team that are currently on track in almost all competitions. They proved this on Thursday evening, when they secured a 1-0 victory against Turkish cup winners Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League. In The Bundesliga, Julian Schuster's team are sitting in third place, with 13 points from seven games, having already reached the Round of 16 in the DFB Pokal.
Union, meanwhile, travel to the South-West on the back of three league games without a defeat, having recently drawn against Dortmund, Augsburg, and Köln.
The success of SC Freiburg is hardly surprising. For years, the club have focused on continuity rather than short-lived trends and have developed gradually into a solid presence in The Bundesliga's upper reaches. Since 2024, Freiburg-born Julian Schuster has been continuing the work of his predecessor Christian Streich. The former captain knows the club and their environment well and has maintained their successful trajectory of recent years.
This was also evident last season when Freiburg reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, European success as yet another testament to the club's development.
Things are going well for the Breisgauer, yes, but this is especially the case at home, having won their last three Bundesliga games there against Werder Bremen, Schalke 04, and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Anyone wanting to take points from the Europa-Park Stadion must work hard for them.
Prior to his move to Köpenick in summer 2022, Janik Haberer spent six years at SC Freiburg, where he made 30 goal contributions in 171 competitive matches. Wooyeong Jeong also wore the Freiburg shirt, making 100 appearances with 17 goal involvements. There are also familiar faces on the sidelines, fitness coach Daniel Wolf and assistant coach Florian Bruns both previously worked for Union.
Stanley Nsoki, Aljoscha Kemlein, Felix Uduokhai and Robert Skov will have to miss the trip to Freiburg.
“We want to show our true face away from home, actually regardless of where we play. That is the challenge for the next step,” said Union’s head coach Mauro Lustrinelli at his press conference on Friday afternoon. “Freiburg are a good opponent and a very organised team who also delivered a strong performance in Turkey on Thursday evening. We want o be aware of this challenge to maximize our chances.”
Nearly 1,500 Unioner will travel to Freiburg. The Union Fahr-Zeughaus will also be on site. More Information on visiting the stadium can be found on the Union homepage.
The match will be broadcast live in Germany by DAZN, with an audio stream on rbb24 Inforadio and on rbb24. Union will provide updates on the match via the club's live ticker, as well as in English on Twitter. As ever a comprehensive, English-only, match report will be published shortly after the final whistle.
