Point hunting on the Main:
Union's guest appearance in Frankfurt
Rested and full of renewed energy, the men’s professional team of 1. FC Union Berlin will compete in the fourth Bundesliga matchday on Sunday, 21.09.2025: They will face Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park at 15:30 for the next points.
The Situation
The Frankfurt team can be confident that the offensive machinery continues to work. With the thrilling 5-1 home victory against Galatasaray [Istanbul] in the UEFA Champions League, the Hessen team now has a total of 20 goals and four victories in five competitive matches.
Currently, it is 2-2 for the Eisernen in terms of wins and losses. Following their success in the Cup and the victorious Bundesliga debut against VfB Stuttgart, they faced a 0-3 defeat in Dortmund and a turbulent 2-4 against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
As has almost become tradition, SGE had to accept notable departures in this summer transfer window. Particularly the loss of forward Hugo Ekitiké and defense chief Tuta left gaps, but at the same time brought the most euros into the Frankfurt coffers. Also, between the posts, the responsible parties made a change, after the long-time number one, Kevin Trapp, left Frankfurt again for Paris, this time to Paris FC. With Bremen's Michael Zetterer, a replacement was quickly found; the former German U21 national player guarded the goal in all league matches.
On the Frankfurt transfer gain side, there is also Jonathan Burkhardt, who ended his personal chapter with Mainz 05 after more than ten years and is now strengthening the SGE's offense. He is supported by a former Freiburg player: Ritsu Doan exchanged the Breisgau for the Main metropolis after three years and is already well on his way to becoming the new top scorer of the Adlerträger. Four goals and one assist are recorded after four competitive matches, with only Can Uzun delivering more with three goals and three assists.
The match this weekend is also the 21st encounter between both teams. While Eintracht has been able to win ten matches so far, six successes are credited to Union. Four draws complete the record.
In the past season, Leopold Querfeld and Wooyeong Jeong scored goals, and Frederik Rönnow saved a penalty, leading to a 2-1 victory and the start of a point-rich period, which ultimately resulted in staying in the league.
That Frederik Rönnow is also the only player returning to a former workplace for the match. Between 2018 and 2021, the Dane played 21 matches for Frankfurt.
Head coach Steffen Baumgart has to do without Josip Juranović, Stanley Nsoki, Livan Burcu, and Andrik Markgraf for the match, and Tom Rothe is additionally absent due to a red card suspension.
“Whoever watched the match against Galatasaray should be motivated for Sunday. On top of that, the stadium, which is always full in Frankfurt. Eintracht will play with the same power as always and also has a deep squad to compensate for the short break. We need to be fully present, can only allow ourselves few mistakes, and only then can we achieve something in Frankfurt. However, we showed last season that we can win there,” said head coach Steffen Baumgart during the press conference before the match.
“It will be a completely different match on Sunday with a different game dynamic. Union will give us more of the ball, so we need to develop a good structure with the ball. We want to show a good game,” said SGE head coach Dino Toppmöller.
For the match in Frankfurt, nearly 3000 Unioner are traveling to the Main, and the Union vehicle house will also be on site. Further information about visiting the stadium can be found here.
