Khedira in the World Cup, Schäfer Ends the Season in Style
Unioner Take to the World
Co-hosts Mexico will kick off the Football World Cup against South Africa on Thursday evening, a tournament that will have Union represented in the form of Rani Khedira. In the last two friendlies, he faced strong European opponents with Tunisia, while András Schäfer successfully completed the last international match phase with Hungary before the summer break.
Tunisia gather rhythm ahead of the big tournament
For Rani Khedira, there were two challenging tests on the agenda, the last ones before the start of the World Cup in Group F. Tunisia faced Austria in Vienna to kick things off. In an intense match, the team, coached by Sabri Lamouchi, narrowly lost 1-0, but showed a solid defensive performance for large parts of the game with the Union vice-captain acting again as an focal point in the middle. A few days later, they faced a real test in Belgium. Following a red card in the 62nd minute, Tunisia played with a man down for about half an hour and ultimately lost 5-0. Khedira, however, did not play against the Belgians. For Khedira and his Tunisian national team, the focus now shifts directly to the World Cup in North America. In Group F, they face strong opponents in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan.
Hungary successfully rebuilding
András Schäfer and the Hungarian national team played two friendlies that should provide important insights for the future. In the first match against Finland, they had a successful start, winning 2-1 in Budapest. Schäfer played in central midfield and delivered an excellent performance over the full 90 minutes. Then, on Tuesday evening, the second match of the international break followed against Kazakhstan. In Debrecen, Hungary won 3-1. The Kazakhs surprised with an early lead, but just after halftime, Dominik Szoboszlai equalized. Then Union's Schäfer took center stage: with a brilliant long-range shot, he turned the match around before the third goal was scored just before the end.
