Union's Women Win Twice

At yesterday's CHAMPIONS Gala 2025, Berlin's outstanding athletes were honoured. 1. FC Union Berlin were awarded twice.

Ailien Poese, head coach of the women's team, was named Coach of the Year 2025. She won aheadof nine male competitors in the coach/manager category, as the first woman to receive this awardin the history of the CHAMPIONS vote.

“Of course, I am very pleased with the award and would like to thank all the women and men from Berlin who voted for me. I appreciate this honour greatly because it shows that the work we have been doing at Union for many years receives some public recognition. Above all, I would like to thank my family for supporting me in all phases. I am convinced that we will manage to settle well into the Bundesliga this season and know that there is still a lot of work ahead of us,” said Ailien Poese after the vote.

The women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin were also awarded Women's Team of the Year 2025. The previous year’s winners from ALBA Berlin followed in the standings, along with a trio N. Arndt, A. Kosan & H. Ripken from rhythmic gymnastics.

“I am even more pleased that we, as a whole team, were awarded. The team has received this recognition and can be very proud of what they have achieved. I would also like to thank all those who no longer play with us today, but who had a significant share in the success in the 2. Bundesliga,” said Union's head coach.

“We are very grateful for the award. We greatly appreciate the recognition, and it fills us with a lot of pride. We would like to accept the title on behalf of the fans, as they have supported us throughout the year. I believe this is a very nice honour for the entire club, and accordingly, we accept the title for everyone who has supported us on our journey so far,” said captain, Lisa Heiseler.

The Men's Team of the Year were the Füchse Berlin, who won the German handball championship title for the first time in their history, ahead of Eisbären Berlin and BR Volleys. Union's men's team narrowly missed the podium and finished in fourth place.

Sportswoman and sportsman of the year were Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin, who were vice world champions in figure skating.
