A hectic start - Union take an early lead

The opening minutes of this derby brought both teams a chance to score. Union's Katja Orschmann, broke through on the right wing, but only hit the side netting after just a minute. Svenja Pock then tested goalkeeper Julia Kassen from the edge of the penalty area befor two were up, but Union's stopper was equal to it.

So it was of little great shock that Nele Bauereisen gave Union the lead only a minute more after that. She reacted quickly in the penalty area, turning and placing the ball from the penalty spot into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.

Hertha's Johanna Seifert twice could have equalised, when after eight and then seventeen minutes, she had nearly identical opportunities. Both times, she dribbled into space on the inside right, shooting from 25 yards with her left foot, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar both times.

After that hectic start, the match calmed down somewhat, with Union controlling the game, keeping the ball. But scoring chances remained few and far between for either side, until Elfie Wellhausen failed to beat kassen in a one-on-one just before halftime. At the other end, Bauereisen failed to score with a shot against goalkeeper Inga Buchholz.

No way through for Hertha - Heiseler and Steuerwald extend the lead.

After the change of sides and a raft of substitutions from the hosts, Dina Orschmann made her presence felt for the first time with a shot from the edge of the box, though, just as she would again shortly afterwards, she put just wide.  Shortly thereafter, the substitute Ella Mettner caused a little panic with a low drive from range, but that too drifted wide.

Union stepped up their attacks. First, Samantha Steuerwald almost got onto Dina Orschmann's low cross before putting just wide of the goal with a header after a cross from Dina's twin, Katja Orschmann, on the stroke of the hour.

Finally, Lisa Heiseler managed to extend the lead for the guests. After another Dina Orschmann pass, the captain skillfully finished for 2-0..

Ten minutes later, Samantha Steuerwald was finally rewarded for her committed performance. Shifting the ball onto her right foot at the edge of the box, she hit an unstoppable shot for Union's third. It was a beauty.

The reactions to the game

“It was a wild game, but we scored three goals, conceded none, and everyone got a lot of playing minutes – we are satisfied overall. It's always a bit mixed up during an international match break, and considering that, we did really well.”

“In the first half, it was quite wild and messy on our part, which we were able to briefly address during the half-time break and then improved upon. It is currently an excellent time to give many players minutes and discuss individual matters. Despite the unusual processes, we implemented many things well and ultimately had a good Friendly,”

Outlook for the upcoming week:

Due to the international break, league operations will be paused for one and a half weeks. On Wednesday, 22.04.2026, Union’s women will host the record champions from Munich at 18:00 in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Tickets for the match are available for general sale at all Union-Zeughäuser as well as online.
