Completion of the training camp:

Union women test against VfL Wolfsburg

On Sunday, 10.08.2025, the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin will visit VfL Wolfsburg on their way back from the summer training camp. The second Friendly of the 2025/26 season will kick off at 16:00 at the AOK-Stadion.

The Situation

Both the women’s team of VfL Wolfsburg and Union’s women are in the middle of their summer preparation. The Wölfinnen lost their first Friendly of the summer to RasenBallsport Leipzig with 2-3, but the Grün-Weißen won the second test with 6-0 against AC Sparta Praha.

The women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin started their summer preparation last weekend with a 3-2 victory against Pogon Stettin.

Four women in training on a football field use a coaching tool to practice ball control.

The runners-up of the Bundesliga season 2024/25 have significantly changed their squad for the new season: 15 departures have been followed so far by eleven new signings. Among them are the German national team players and European Championship participants Stina Johannes, Cora Zicai, and Sophia Kleinherne. Leaving the Wolves are, among others, Jule Brand, Marina Hegering, and Kathrin Hendrich.

There is also a return on the coaching bench: Stephan Lerch has been reintroduced as the head coach. He successfully managed the VfL women from 2017 to 2021 and during that time won three German championships and four DFB Pokal titles.

The Wolfsburg women are the record holders in the DFB Pokal with a total of eleven titles and are also among the top teams internationally - they won the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2013 and 2014.

On 08.10.2017, the women of VfL Wolfsburg faced the women of 1. FC Union Berlin in the DFB Pokal. It was the first and so far only competitive match between the two teams. The match ended with a 6-0 victory for the Wolfsburg women.

In the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga 2025/26, the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin will meet the Grün-Weißen at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on matchday nine.

For four Unionerinnen, there will be a special reunion on Sunday. Assistant coach Sabrina Eckhoff was significantly involved in numerous successes during her time at VfL Wolfsburg in the same role - including the German Championship in 2022, the DFB Pokal victories in 2022, 2023, and 2024, as well as reaching the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2023.

Goalkeeping coach Alisa Vetterlein is also no stranger at VfL. She was responsible for goalkeeping training for both the youth sector and the professional team.

For Union’s goalkeeper Melanie Wagner and newcomer Samantha Steuerwald, the visit also feels like a home game: both have already gained match experience with the second team of the Wölfinnen.

Hannah Eurlings, Leonie Köster, Judith Steinert, Elli Seiro, Ida Heikkinen, Fatma Sakar, Antonia Halverkamps, and Anna Aehling are not available to Union's head coach Ailien Poese for the match.

“We are looking forward to testing ourselves against a top team from The Bundesliga after our training camp. We have revisited many topics and want to take the next steps in our preparation with the Friendly,” said head coach Ailien Poese ahead of the match.

The match will kick off on Sunday at 16:00 in the AOK-Stadion. Tickets for the away match of Union’s women are available through the VfL Ticket Shop. The blocks S1 (standing area) and S2 (seating area) serve as away blocks.

The match against the Bundesliga rivals will be broadcast live on AFTV+. As usual, Union will also keep you informed via the club's own live ticker about the match.

Be present at the stadium An der Alten Försterei.
