Women's Bundesliga Action on Sunday Afternoon

Union Travel to Wolfsburg

Following their 4-1 victory against Bremen on Monday, 1. FC Union Berlin's women’s will travel with plenty of confidence to play second-placed VfL Wolfsburg. Kick off at the AOK-Stadion on Sunday is at 16:00.

The lie of the land
VfL Wolfsburg are in typical good form, having won their last five mtahces on the bounce. On Tuesday evening, they won their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Olympique Lyon 1-0. They also won their last league match 1-0 away in Hoffenheim.

But Union are also in good shape, impressing in their 4-1 home victory against Bremen. They are now unbeaten in four matches.

For the first time since the 2012/13 season, the 'Wölfinnen' finished last season without any silverwear, and it seems unlikely that the league title will go their way this year either. With six games remaining, the gap to leaders Bayern is already eleven points. However, in the Champions League, Wolfsburg have a good chance to reach the semifinals after their 1-0 victory in the quarterfinal first leg against Lyon. They are also in the DFB Pokal, where on Easter Sunday, they will go to Carl Zeiss Jena for a place in the final.

Wolfsburg have the second-best attack in the league with 58 goals scored. Top scorer with twelve, in her last of 14 seasons, is club legend Alexandra Popp. The 145-time international sustained a muscle injury last weekend against Hoffenheim, however, and will be out for several weeks. In the summer, the 35-year-old will join Borussia Dortmund.

In Popp's absence, forward Lineth Beerensteyn will come into focus. Last season's top scorer (16 goals) has already found the net nine times this season, also scoring the vital winner against Lyon during the week. Alongside Beerensteyn, Kessya Bussy (eight goals) is also close to reaching a double-digit goal tally in the league.

The Wolfsburg women have the most experienced squad in the league with a combined 2867 Bundesliga matches under their belts. This compares to Bayern, with 2392 and Frankfurt, with 2127. Union's squad currently have played 1005 matches in the top flight.

The teams have faced each other in a competitive match only twice. In October 2017, Wolfsburg won 6-0 in the second round of the DFB Pokal. Earlier this season, Union led at halftime with a goal from Antonia Halverkamps, but ultimately lost 4-1.

Union Berlin did prevail in pre-season when goals from Sophie Weidauer and Nele Bauereisen secured a 2-0 victory in their friendly.

Last summer, assistant coach Sabrina Eckhoff and goalkeeper coach Alisa Vetterlein moved from Wolfsburg to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Eckhoff was an assistant coach at VfL from 2021 to 2025. Vetterlein was in goal for the Wölfinnen in 69 competitive matches from 2009 to 2013 and won the historic treble in 2013. From 2021, she served as the goalkeeper coach for the professionals. Eckhoff and Vetterlein together won one championship and three DFB Pokal titles while in Wolfsburg's coaching staff.

There are also two connections on the player side to the Grün-Weißen: center-back Samantha Steuerwald made 51 appearances in the second division for Wolfsburg's U20 team from 2015 to 2018. Goalkeeper Julia Kassen played for the second team from 2019 to 2023 and made 43 appearances in the second division.

Union's coaching team will have to do without the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Korina Janež, Leonie Köster, Mariann Noack, Cara Bösl, and Tomke Schneider on Saturday.

“With the away trip to Wolfsburg, one of the biggest challenges in the league is ahead of us. We want to leave our hearts on the pitch, be compact, and go into duels that with determination, so that we can see what opportunities present themselves,” said Union head coach Ailien Poese during midweek.

Tickets for the match are still available in the online shop of VfL Wolfsburg. Away fans should purchase tickets in S1 or S2, these blocks are mixed blocks for home and away fans for the match. The stadium opens 90 minutes before kick off. Due to its city center location, the AOK Stadion can be reached from Wolfsburg Central Station/ZOB and from the town center via a short walking distance.

The match will be broadcast live in Germany on DAZN and MagentaSport. Union will provide updates on the own live ticker as well as on Twitter in English. As ever, a comprehensive, English-only match report will be published on the Union site shortly after the final whistle.
