Women’s World Cup Qualification Round up:

Union’s International Fortunes

In the past two weeks, seven players from 1. FC Union Berlin have been with their national teams, six of them competed with their A national teams in the qualification for the 2027 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Goals for Weidauer & Eurlings – No debut for Reissner

The Belgian national team, featuring Hannah Eurlings, made an almost perfect start to their World Cup qualification. In two encounters in Budaörs, Hungary, Belgium first gave the Israeli team no chance. In a 3-0 victory, Union's number 14 set up one goal and scored the second herself; in the second match, which ended in a 5-0 win, though playing, Eurlings did not have a direct involvement in any of the goals. Amber Tysiak, who was also nominated for the Belgian team, left early and therefore did not participate.

Athanasia Moraitou and the Greek national team were able to win both home matches in League C, Group 4. In the first encounter against Georgia, the "Ethniki" won 3-0. Moraitou was on the pitch for 69 minutes, as former Union player Eleni Markou scored the first goal for the Greeks. In the second match, Union's number 77 played the entire match in the 2-0 victory against the Faroe Islands.

Fatma Şakar also started both matches for the Turkish national team. The Union full-back made an impression in both their victories in League B, Group 2. In the 3-0 win against Malta, Şakar played 72 minutes, and in the 1-0 win in Northern Ireland, she played 68 minutes.

The fourth national player to return to Berlin with a perfect international match record is Lia Kamber. With Switzerland, Union's number 41 is in the same group as Şakar with Turkey. The "Nati" triumphed over Northern Ireland with 2-0 and over Malta with 4-1. Kamber was substituted in both matches and completed her international matches number four and five.

In the opening match of League A, Group 2, the Polish national team, led by Tanja Pawollek, faced a tough schedule in the World Cup qualification with two matches against the top nations Netherlands and France. The Polish team managed to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Gdansk, with Pawollek assisting the opening goal for top striker Ewa Pajor. In the second match, they lost 4-1 to France. Union's midfield engine was in the starting lineup for both games.

For the first time, Naika Reissner was part of the Austrian national squad, under national coach Alexander Schriebl. Austria lost both matches 1-0 against Slovenia and Norway (League A, Group 4). Reissner did not play and is therefore still waiting for her international debut.

Sophie Weidauer meanwhile traveled with the German U23 team to Norway to qualify for the Final Four of the international match series. However, the team coached by Michael Urbansky fell to a 3-1 defeat. Four days later, things went better in the game against Belgium. Weidauer led the German team onto the field as captain, and scored early for 1-0 as Germany secured a convincing 4-2 victory.
