SC Freiburg’s women’s football team were founded in 1975, and they have since been established as an important presence in German women’s football, playing continuously in the top flight since promotion in 2011. They play their home matches at the Dreisamstadion, which has a capacity of around 24,000 spectators.

Freiburg finished their last campaign in 8th place in the table. Among the greatest successes in the club’s history are their appearances in the DFB-Pokal finals in 2019 and 2023.

During the summer break, the club were particularly active in the transfer market. With 13 new signings and seven departures, the squad underwent a noticeable change. Freiburg even started the season with a new head coach, Marco Konrad, who took over from Edmond Kapllani in June 2026. The 51-year-old had previously spent two years as assistant coach in the men’s team at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. This is Konrad’s first role in women’s football.

The first ever meeting between the sides ended in a 1–1 draw in Breisgau last season, while, in the return fixture, Union suffered a 3-0 defeat at home.

It will be a very special match for Swiss forward Leela Egli, who wore the SC Freiburg shirt before her move to Union this summer, having made 48 competitive appearances for the first team.

Union's coaching staff will be without Anna Aehling, Hannah Eurlings, Ida Heikkinen, Korina Janež, Mariann Noack, Dina Orschmann and Tanja Pawollek.

“We’re looking forward to our first away match of the season,” said Union head coach, Marie-Louise Eta, during midweek. “We’re up against an established Bundesliga side in Freiburg, that play bold, attacking football and have a strong team spirit. We’re expecting a challenging match that will demand everything from us. We want to play with courage ourselves and bring our strengths to bear on the pitch so that we can return to Köpenick with three points.”

The gates at the Dreisamstadion will open 90 minutes before kick-off. Tickets are available online in advance; there will be no ticket office at the away supporters’ section ( Block A.)

SC Freiburg are advised to use Park & Ride facilities or the car parks at the neighbouring University of Education (PH).
