The Men's First-Team Call-Ups

Union Players' International Weeks

The 2026 World Cup is approaching, and for several of 1. FC Union Berlin's men's team, preparations have already begun. Rani Khedira and Derrick Köhn took advantage of their Friendlies to make a case for representation in the Summer tournament. Frederik Rönnow fought with Denmark for a last chance at a World Cup ticket, while András Schäfer sought redemption with Hungary having missed out on qualification. Meanwhile, some of the younger Unioner faced crucial qualifying matches of their own.

Debuts, Big Points, and Bursting World Cup Dreams

Rani Khedira played 73 minutes in his debut for the Tunisian national team in a Friendly against Haiti. The "Eagles of Carthage" celebrated a 1-0 victory, secured by Sebastian Tounekti with his goal in the seventh minute. After the game in Toronto, Sabri Lamouchi's side had another test in Orlando, against World Cup hosts, Canada, where it ended in a 0-0 draw, with Khedira on the field for 70 minutes.

Denmark may have needed a half to find their rhythm against North Macedonia, but showed a significant improvement after the break and eventually won their Play-off semi-final 4-0. But in the subsequent final against the Czechia , Frederik Rönnow had to watch on from the bench again as his Denmark side lost 3-1 in the penalty shootout, thus missing their last chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Derrick Köhn played on the left side of defense for Ghana, as he does at Union. However, he could not prevent a 5-1 defeat against Austria. In the second warm-up match for the summer tournament, Ghana also lost 2-1 to Germany. Köhn played well, springing the move that helped Ghana come back to make it 1-1.

András Schäfer's teammate Szabolcs Schön scored the winner against Slovenia ten minutes before the end, starting a successful week of Friendlies for his Hungary side. On Tuesday evening, they had to settle with a 0-0 draw against Greece. Schäfer was part of the starting eleven in both matches, playing the duration of the second match.

Speaking of Greece, The German U-21 side, featuring Tom Rothe and Aljoscha Kemlein, also faced the the "Galanolefki" U-21s as leaders of their European Championship qualification group. With a 2-0 victory, the DFB German talents took the top position in Group F. Previously, coach Antonio Di Salvo's team had already secured a solid 3-0 win against the third-placed team from Northern Ireland.

The Turkish U-2s1 were also in action during the Euros qualification. However, Livan Burcu, Union, and the Turkish FA agreed on an early departure for the winger for precautionary reasons. Thus, he could only watch from home as his team lost 0-3 to the Croatian U-21s.

Dmytro Bogdanov was also away with a youth selection. In Group 5, the Ukrainian U-19s faced Northern Ireland, Kazakhstan and Romania, remaining unbeaten in all three matches. A 1-0 win against Northern Ireland was followed by a commanding 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan, in which Bogdanov scored himself. Although the final match against Romania ended in a 1-1 draw, the Ukrainians still managed to retain top spot in their group.
