Pitching in Together

Union Players in Charitable Action Across the City

It has become a small tradition. On an afternoon during the pre-Christmas season, the players of 1.FC Union Berlin's two professional teams visit to help out various social projects around the capital.

Organized by the foundation "UNION VEREINT. Schulter am Schulter", they brought smiling eyes and joyful spirits to a total of ten different locations in Berlin last Tuesday. Divided into small groups, the players visited – together with their coaching and support teams – the Advent celebration for seniors at the Berliner Stadtmission as well as the Christmas party at Haus Theresa, a home for people with addiction and mental health issues, among other places.

The focus was also on participatory projects such as food preparation and distribution in emergency shelters of the Berliner Stadtmission and in collaboration with "Laib und Seele" at Union's fan house. Crafting skills were also in demand, whether in creating fan merchandise at the Tegel correctional facility or doing painting work in a residence for refugees operated by the International Bund. Of course, sports were not neglected either, as some players dropped by two schools and a youth assistance facility to get children moving playfully.

"Bringing joy to people who have to fight through life is a special concern for us this afternoon," said Christian Arbeit, chairman of the foundation "UNION VEREINT. Schulter am Schulter". "At the same time, we want to draw attention to the fact that there are many people in our society with a great need for support. We can all contribute to making our world a little better through acts of solidarity.”
