Kick-off to the 2025/26 season:
Union players gain initial match experience in Szczecin
In the first Friendly of the summer preparation 2025, the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin faces a familiar opponent: Pogon Stettin will host the Köpenickerinnen next Saturday. The kick off of the match takes place at 13:00 on pitch B3 at the Florian-Krygier-Stadion.
The Situation
Pogon started their preparation for the new season at the beginning of July and has already played three Friendlies. After a 1-1 draw in the opener against FC Slovan Liberec, the Polish team won 3-2 against AC Sparta Prague two days later. Most recently, there was a 2-1 victory against league rival AP Orlen Gdansk.
The women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin completed their first team training session of the season on 21.07.2025 in front of around 250 spectators at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The duel with Pogon represents the first real test after two intense training weeks. Afterwards, the team will travel to a six-day training camp in Klosterpforte on 05.08.2025.
After Pogon Szczecin secured the Polish championship title for the first time in the club's history in 2024, the Blue-Red team entered the finished 2024/25 season as the defending champions. Pogon concluded that season in third place behind the new champion GKS Katowice, who allowed themselves only a single defeat throughout the entire season, as well as record champions Czarni Sosnowiec. The most successful goalscorer for Pogon last season was Kornelia Okoniewska, who narrowly missed the top scorer award with 15 goals.
Together with Union's new signing Tanja Pawollek, Pogon goalkeeper Natalia Radkiewicz was also part of the Polish national team's squad for the European Championship in Switzerland. The 21-year-old, however, did not see any playing time during the tournament. Also nominated was Martyna Brodzik, who played for Pogon last season. The midfielder, who also did not get any playing time, joined Brøndby IF for the new season.
The head coach of the team remains Piotr Leczynski, who has been in charge since 2023.
The duel on Saturday is already the fourth meeting between both teams in the past two years. The teams first faced each other in the summer of 2023 in Szczecin, when the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin managed to secure a 2-1 victory just before the end. A year later, Union also maintained their upper hand in the training camp in Bad Saarow, winning 3-2.
However, the last duel in January of this year was decided in favor of Pogon: In Dörpfeldstraße, the guests won 2-1 after Union had initially taken the lead with a goal from Naika Reissner.
In addition to the two Euro participants Nadine Böhi and Hannah Eurlings, head coach Ailien Poese will also be without Leonie Köster, Ida Heikkinen, Antonia Halverkamps, Fatma Sakar, Anna Aehling, and Elli Seiro next Saturday.
“Pogon Szczecin is a physically very robust team with an aggressive style of play and good organization in defense. We want to use our first Friendly after the start of training to sharpen our processes and implement the discussed content in competition,” Ailien Poese is looking forward to the start of the new season.
The match will kick off on Saturday at 13:00 on pitch B3 at the Florian-Krygier-Stadion in Szczecin. Free tickets for the game are exclusively available through the homepage of Pogon Szczecin. There will be no ticket booth on site.
As usual, Union also informs about the match in the club's own live ticker.
