Union active – Espanyol scores from the penalty spot
The Iron Ones tried hard but were unsuccessful – second half remains goalless
Union had the better start to the second half: Josip Juranović defended aggressively forward, won the ball and immediately crossed it into the penalty area. There, András Schäfer rose for a header, but got into an aerial duel with the opposing goalkeeper, who fell to the ground. The referee deemed the action an offensive foul – bitter for the Eisernen, as Andrej Ilić was ready to push the rebound into the empty net (49.).
Following that, the Berliners continued to play more aggressively and often looked for the direct path to the front. In the 59th minute, Rani Khedira took heart and executed a throw-in cross with a volley – however, his powerful shot flew just past the post. Seven minutes later, Union had another dangerous opportunity: after a cross, the advancing Danilho Doekhi rose highest in the penalty area but directed his header too centrally, allowing the Espanyol goalkeeper to safely gather the ball.
In the final quarter of an hour, the Berliners increasingly dominated the game. The guests from Barcelona retreated deep into their own half and allowed Union long periods of ball possession. In search of the decisive gap, Baumgart's team let the ball circulate through their ranks. However, the crucial opening remained elusive that afternoon – and so the match ended in a 0-1 defeat.
Voices after the match
“One aspect is certainly that we are tired. We have just returned from the training camp. There we had ten hard days including two matches. In matches like today, it's not necessarily about the result, but rather about the things that the coach wants to see. And there was a lot to see today nevertheless”, said Alex Král after the final whistle.
“We did not take advantage of the chances we had, especially in the second half. However, I am sure that it will get better in the coming weeks. I myself am glad to be back, but I am also looking forward to a little leisure time”, added Aljoscha Kemle in theAnschluss.
“The three results annoy us, especially when we lose the games twice due to a penalty. I believe, that at the moment sometimes we are missing the right decisions. But we have many hard-working players, up front as well as hidden, who keep trying and then we will also get to clean finishes. We know what we did well and now it’s about getting back into the normal processes of the season,” is the analysis of head coach Steffen Baumgart after the duel.
