Women's Team Full of Confidence Ahead of Next Bundesliga Clash

Union Look to Repeat Their Trick in Leipzig

With a home victory before the international break and with memories of the 5-0 rout earlier in the season, 1. FC Union Berlin's women's team will travel to Leipzig this coming Saturday. Kick off against RB at RasenBallsport training center is at 16:00.

The lie of the land
Leipzig are currently in good form, remaining unbeaten in their last four matches. After 3-1 victories against Hamburg and 1. FC Nürnberg, they went into the international break on the back of a 2-2 draw against SGS Essen.

Union secured their first home win of 2026 with a 2-1 victory against 1. FC Köln two and a half weeks ago. Away, they remain unbeaten in the second half of the season with seven points from three matches.

RasenBallsport Leipzig are currently one point and one place behind Union in 10th. Thanks to their recent winning streak, the Saxons have managed to gain some breathing room in the relegation battle and can cautiously plan for their fourth Bundesliga season with a nine-point cushion over the relegation spots.

Before that recent run of form, head coach Jonas Stephan's team lost six matches in a row between November and January. Leipzig are however particularly convincing up front, wth the sixth-best attack in the league, despite the summer departure of striker Vanessa Fudalla, who is currently leading the top scorers list in Leverkusen. This is even more remarkable given that since matchday six, captain and international striker Giovanna Hoffmann has been sidelined with a torn ACL.

Although it will likely take some time for the 27-year-old to return to the pitch, she was nonetheless a major topic of conversation during the international break as VfL Wolfsburg announced her signing for the nextseason. Hoffmann has been involved in 22 goals in 28 matches for RasenBallsport Leipzig.

In eight games between the sides,Union have won five. One match ended in a draw, while the women from Leipzig prevailed twice during their time in the Regionalliga.

The first Bundesliga game in October marked Union's highest top flight to date win to date. In front of over 7,500 spectators at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Union won 5-0.

Jenny Hipp, Korina Janež, and Fatma Şakar all have a past in Leipzig, and all three celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga there in the summer of 2023.

Union's coaching team will miss the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Korina Janež, Mariann Noack, and Tomke Schneider on Saturday.

“Leipzig are a skillful team that has found form over the course of the season and consistently pose a threat in front of the opponent's goal," said Union head coach, Ailien Poese, head of Saturday's game. "They circulate the ball well, and have a high level of finishing quality. For us, it means bringing the combative performance from the last match back onto the pitch and being alert at every moment of the game – both with and without the ball."

Union can look forward to strong support from the stands. Over 300 tickets have already been booked for the away block, and more are still available in the ticket shop of RasenBallsport Leipzig. There is also a ticket office located at the entrance to the south stand, which opens one hour before kick off on match day. The official away blocks are in blocks 1 and 2. Seats for away fans are available in partial areas of block 3. The stadium opens at 15:00.

Fans are advised to use the parking garages, park-and-ride spaces, as well as public transport. The ticket allows all fans to use public transport in the MDV area for free five hours before and five hours after the match. Tram lines 3, 7, 8, and 15 go to the match location. The stops “Sportforum Süd” or “Angerbrücke” are accessible on foot.

The match will be broadcaston DAZN and Magenta Sport in Germany. Additionally, MDR will show the encounter on TV and in a livestream. Union will provide updates on the match in a live ticker. Updates in English will be provided on twitter while, as ever, a comprehensive, English-only, match report will be published on the Union website shortly after the final whistle.
