"Fulfilling a lifelong dream"
Carl Klaus Gets a New Deal
1. FC Union Berlin have agreed to an extension of goalkeeper Carl Klaus' contract. The 32-year-old, who stepped into the starting eleven in recent weeks due to the injuries of Frederik Rönnow and Matheo Raab, has impressed not only on the pitch, but also as an important part of the team off it.
Ready when Union needed him
On the Friday evening of matchday thirty-one in Leipzig, he was needed. After pulling up at a goal kick, regular keeper Frederik Rönnow signaled that he could not continue. Carl Klaus was ready, he strapped up his gloves and took to the pitch to celebrate his Bundesliga debut in the thirty-first minute. “Everything happened very quickly. I was prepared, just had to take off my bottoms and sweater and be there right away. The game doesn’t wait, and the team needs a goalkeeper who can perform in just such a moment,” Klaus recalled.
Just a few minutes after his substitution, he showed exactly what he can do. After a header from Rômulo, the 6'3" stopper tipped the ball onto the crossbar at full stretch. Despite Union's 3-1 loss, the evening remained special for him.
His first win as a Bundesliga goalkeeper was soon to come. After a 2-2 draw against Köln in his first starting XI appearance, Union beat 1. FSV Mainz 05, 3-1, last weekend. In both matches, Klaus impressed with his strong saves and great composure, all the more reason for the now completed contract extension.
Reactions on the Extension
“For me personally, achieving something historic here and fulfilling a lifelong dream means a lot. I am grateful to the club, the coaching team, and everyone responsible for their trust," said Klaus on the signing of his new deal. "Since my first day, I have felt incredibly comfortable at Union. Now I look forward to giving something back to the team and the fans. I will invest everything every day and give my best."
“From the very beginning, Carl has impressed with discipline, determination, and team spirit, and has gradually developed into an important part of the team," said Union's director of men's professional football, Horst Heldt. "That we were able to confidently place our actual number three in goal is by no means a given and speaks to his quality. We are looking forward to going into the final match of the season and into the new season with him.”
