Thanks for the Good Times
1. FC Union Berlin Say Goodbye to 11 Players
The end of a season inevitably means changes in the squad and the parting of ways. So as 2024/25 draws to a close, 1. FC Union Berlin bids farewell to 11 heroes who achieved promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history, and will be remembered for a long time to come.
Sarah Abu Sabbah, Charleen Niesler, Zita Rurack, Sophie Trojahn, Anouk Blaschka, Ginger Schulz, Latoya Bach, Eleni Markou, Marie Becker, Maria Cristina Lange and Pia Metzker will leave 1. FC Union Berlin.
“It is never easy when deserving players leave the club,” said Jennifer Zietz, Union's director of women’s professional football. “Our development over the last two years has been very rapid, and we want to achieve the best possible results in the upcoming Bundesliga season. For this reason, it is necessary to further strengthen our squad and provide new impetus. I thank every individual player for their performances. Each one of them has played their part in our success, and it is thanks to them that Union's women will now also be playing in the Bundesliga. They can be very proud of what they have achieved; the promotion is also to their credit and will always be associated with them.”
Latoya Bach has worn the Union shirt for nine seasons. After a promising hockey career in her youth and her first season with the U17 women’s team, she made her competitive debut for the women’s team in 2017. She scored in her very first Regionalliga start, and established herself as a rapid presence on the wing in the following seasons.
The 2022/23 season was the one that saw Bach the most on the pitch. Often in the starting lineup, she played in 22 matches, scoring one goal against 1. FFV Erfurt. In the following season, she contributed three assists in eleven Regionalliga games. She made her 2. Liga debut in the 3-0 home victory against FC Bayern München II in the current season.
Latoya Bach bids farewell after 73 competitive matches and five goals for the first team.
Born in Köpenick, Charleen Niesler joined the youth academy of 1. FC Union Berlin at the age of nine. She progressed through all the club's youth teams and made the leap to the first women's team in the summer of 2014. The defender quickly established herself there and played 89 games for Union over the next five years. After a total of twelve years in red and white, she left Union in 2019 and would represent VfL Wolfsburg II, FC Wacker Innsbruck and 1. FC Köln II in the following years.
In the summer of 2023, Niesler returned to Union, playing 19 Regionalliga matches in the promotion season and playing every minute in the promotion play-offs against Henstedt-Ulzburg. The 27-year-old has made ten appearances so far this season.
Niesler has played 122 games for Union, scoring nine goals. Now, her second chapter at 1. FC Union Berlin now comes to an end.
Jordanian international Sarah Abu Sabbah joined Union in the summer of 2023 from the Bundesliga’s relegated side SV Meppen where, as at her previous clubs, she had already shown that she knows where the goal is. Abu proved this right from the start at her new club when, against Hertha BSC in her first competitive match, she scored twice and played her way into the hearts of the fans. These were the first two of a total of 42 goals in 22 Regionalliga matches, which earned her the title of top scorer in all the Regionalligen, earning the Kicker Torjägerkanone. She scored a hat-trick in the promotion play-off first leg against Henstedt-Ulzburg, which helped secure promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. Abu Sabbah also played a significant role in Union's Berliner Polytan-Pokal victory, scoring eight goals in four appearances. In February 2024, she won the West Asian Championship with the Jordanian national team.
In her second season at Union, the 5’6” striker continued scoring some important goals, but was set back by a long injury in the second half of the season. She fought her way back after Christmas and often revitalised Union's attack as a substitute.
After 41 matches, 50 goals, and two promotions, Sarah Abu Sabbah leaves the women's team of 1. FC Union Berlin.
Central defender Marie Becker, who had previously played for Holstein Kiel, Harvard Crimson and Viktoria Mitte, joined 1. FC Union Berlin for the 2021/22 season. The former German junior international played 14 games in her debut season and developed into the defensive leader of the side. In the following season, Becker was part of the best defence in all five regional leagues. On their way to promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, the team conceded only five goals in 22 league games. In the second division, Union also have the best defence in the league with Becker in a prominent role and only 12 goals conceded. The Kiel-born player appeared in 13 second division matches and scored one goal in the away game in Gütersloh.
At 29 years old, Marie Becker is now ending her professional football career. In total, she played 51 competitive matches for Union, in which she scored two goals. She is expected to play her last professional match tomorrow, on the same day she celebrates her 30th birthday.
At the age of 19, Pia Metzker moved from 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam II to Berlin-Köpenick. Despite her young age, the full-back had already gained plenty of experience in women's football and secured a regular place at FCU. The Aken native celebrated her first competitive goal in red and white in the 11-2 win against Türkiyemspor. Even after an injury break in the second half of the season, Metzker returned to the starting line-up and was selected for both play-off matches for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. In the 8-0 victory over Henstedt-Ulzburg, in front of 18,045 spectators at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Union's number 23 scored the opening goal and set up two more. In the return leg, she also provided another assist for Dina Orschmann's opening goal.
In the 2. Bundesliga, the now twenty-one-year-old played on both sides of defense, particularly contributing to the attack as a wing-back before Christmas. Six of the seven goals she was involved came in the first half of the season. Overall, she has appeared in 23 of the 29 competitive matches this season.
After two promotions, one Berliner Pokal, 38 competitive matches, and five goals in her two great years in red and white, Union and Pia Metzker will now part ways.
Zita Rurack made the leap to Union from FC Internationale Berlin, where she was still playing for the juniors, in 2022. In her debut season, the then 18-year-old developed into a first choice centre-forward and scored on her first start. She celebrated her definitive breakthrough with a brace against long-time Regionalliga rivals Viktoria Berlin, although Union ultimately lost 4-3. Rurack scored eleven goals in 18 league games.
Though the Berlin-born player mainly came on as a substitute in her second season in red and white, she still scored in her first two games, against Hertha BSC and Fortuna Dresden, off the bench. In the return game in Dresden, she even scored a hat-trick in just 30 minutes. This season, the 20-year-old has played in five games and set up one goal. In her three years at Union, Rurack has demonstrated great flexibility, playing in defence, midfield and attack.
Across all competitions, Zita Rurack has made 48 appearances for 1. FC Union Berlin, scoring 17 goals.
Sophie Trojahn quickly impressed the Union fans with her playful style and technical ability. In the summer of 2022, the then 19-year-old joined from Turbine Potsdam's second team. In her debut season for Union, the midfielder was in particularly fine form towards the end of the season, scoring four goals in her last five games.
In a Regionalliga season in which her team did not drop a single point, Trojahn was mainly used as an attacking substitute. She scored three times in 13 appearances. In the higher division, the midfielder came on as a substitute seven times in the first eight games, though she was sidelined for a long period in the second half of the season.
After 38 competitive matches, nine goals, and many irresistible dribbles, Sophie Trojahn will leave the Union at the end of the season.
The then 19-year-old Anouk Blaschka joined FCU in the summer of 2023 from the second team of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. With some second division experience under her belt, the player from Bad Friedrichshall fought her way into the starting line-up during her debut season. She scored her debut goal for Union with a direct free kick in the 11-2 home win against Türkiyemspor. Blaschka played the full 180 minutes in both promotion play-off matches to the 2. Bundesliga.
In the current second division season, the 21-year-old has come on as a substitute in twelve matches. After 35 competitive gamesand six goals, Union will now bid Blaschka goodbye.
The youngest player in the squad joined Union in 2018 and reached the semi-finals of the German championship with the U17’s in 2022. In the same year, at the age of 15, she was promoted to the women's squad and made her debut for the German U16 and U17 national teams.
In her first season in women's football, Schulz made five appearances in the Regionalliga Nordost while continuing to turn out in the U17’s Bundesliga. At the start of the 2023/24 season, the then 17-year-old centre-back was awarded a professional contract and made four appearances in the 2. Bundesliga during the promotion season. The Berlin-born player has not made any appearances in the 2. Bundesliga this season but has played eight games for the U23’s.
Ginger Schulz played 19 Regionalliga matches for Union and is now transferring to Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
The Greek international joined Union from FC Basel last summer, bringing a wealth of experience from the UEFA Women's Champions League.
Her competitive debut in red and white could hardly have been better. With her first touch, Markou headed Union into the lead in the first round of the DFB Pokal against FSV Gütersloh in 2009. In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, she nervelessly converted from the spot to help Union advance to the second round. There, she set up Dina Orschmann's winner against Bundesliga side RasenBallsport Leipzig. In the 2. Bundesliga, the 30-year-old scored three more times in 19 appearances.
After an intense year including promotion to the Bundesliga, 1. FC Union Berlin and Eleni Markou will part ways after 25 competitive matches and four goals.
The 5’9” striker quickly showed the Union fans why she had been signed from 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam thanks to her combination of physicality, speed and technique. With strong performances in the top two German leagues already under her belt, it was only injuries that repeatedly set the German-Spanish player back.
Lange was introduced carefully into the Union first team and had her breakthrough during the 3-0 away victory in Jena, where she scored two goals as a substitute. A week later, she netted five more against Berolina Mitte in her starting debut, followed by two braces against Erfurt and Magdeburg. This outstanding run, however, was followed by a huge blow in November 2023, as she was forced into a long-term absence due to a knee injury. Since then, Lange has been working on her return to the pitch but has been set back repeatedly and needed to undergo surgery again. At just 24 years old, her career now is now at an end for health reasons. With eleven goals in five competitive matches, she is expected to hold the best goals per game average at 1. FC Union Berlin for the foreseeable future.
Thank you for your commitment – you are part of Union history
All eleven players have contributed to the enormous successes of recent years, and with the promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time, they have secured a special place in the history of 1. FC Union Berlin. Many of them were also part of the promotion to the 2. Bundesliga without dropping a single point, have won the Berliner Landespokal, and even took their first steps in professional football with Union.
For their commitment, their passion, and the many shared moments, Union say thank you and will bid them farewell with all due respect before the home game against FSV Gütersloh 2009.
Once an Unioner, always a Unioner!
