Women's Team Looking for Return to Winning ways

The lie os the land
Having suffered three consecutive Bundesliga defeats, RasenBallsport Leipzig are unbeaten in the last two as the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg was followed by a 2-1 home victory against SGS Essen last weekend.
1. FC Union Berlin, however, conceded defeat to 1. FC Köln last Sunday 2-1. The early lead by Sophie Weidauer was turned around by the hosts from the cathedral city within six minutes.
The women's football department of RasenBallsport Leipzig, founded in 2016, has been in the top flight since 2023. In those first two Bundesliga seasons, they finished in eighth place each time.
In the summer, Leipzig lost not only key player Jenny Hipp, who joined Union, but also the long-term form of Vanessa Fudalla. The forward was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 2022/23 with 20 goals, before hitting the net 10 times 1in the last two top-flight seasons. She, however, recently transferred to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, while talent Delice Boboy cane back the other way to Saxony. While Boboy is still waiting for her first Bundesliga goal, the other new signings, Annabel Schasching (SC Freiburg), Andrea Norheim (Sporting CP), and Lisa Baum (Hamburger SV), have already established themselves as regulars.
After Fudalla's departure, German internation Giovanna Hoffmann had a lot of responsibility, as last season's top scorer with eleven goals. The 27-year-old, who played in all five matches at the European Championship in Switzerland, unfortunately tore her cruciate ligament last matchday. A week earlier, her attacking colleague Marleen Schimmer had also been injured. Both forwards are the only players in coach Jonas Stephan's squad who have managed to score two goals so far this season. Te head coach extended his contract earlier this week until 2028.
The clubs faced each other six times in the Regionalliga Nordost, with Union taking the upper hand with three wins, one draw, and two losses.
The most recent meeting, about a year ago in the DFB Pokal, was also won by Union. In the second round, the second division team, defeated the first division team 1-0. The goal of the day was scored by Dina Orschmann.
In addition to Hipp, Korina Janež and Fatma Şakar also have a Leipzig past. Hipp played a total of 79 competitive matches for the club from 2021 to 2025 and scored 18 goals. Janež was on the pitch for RasenBallsport in 34 matches (5 goals) from 2022 to 2024. Şakar also moved to Leipzig in the summer of 2022 but left the club after 33 appearances, half a year before Janež, heading to Berlin-Köpenick. Together, all three players celebrated Leipzig's promotion to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2023.
Union's coaching team will have to make do without the services of Alma Aagaard, Anna Aehling, Nele Bauereisen, Hannah Eurlings, Leonie Köster, Tanja Pawollek, Naika Reissner, Fatma Şakar, and Judith Steinert on Sunday.

Tickets for the game are available for general sale at all Union merchandise stores as well as online. The Stadion An der Alten Försterei opens its gates and the box office at 10:30. Remaining parking spaces are available in front of the main stand for €8.
