The Captain Stays

Trimmel Completes the Dozen

1. FC Union Berlin and Christopher Trimmel will continue their partnership beyond the current season. Union president Dirk Zingler and the long-standing team captain signed the new contract this evening during the club's 60th anniversary celebrations. The 38-year-old Austrian is now entering his twelfth season with Union, writing another chapter in a story that has long transcended mere numbers.

Goals set, goals achieved

Each contract extension represents a new chapter, new goals, and the firm belief that Christopher Trimmel knows exactly why he is continuing on this path. A club legend in football is much more than just a player with many appearances. They are role models, trusted figures and have been for years. Christopher Trimmel has long since achieved this status.

When the Austrian moved to Köpenick in 2014, Union were an ambitious second division club. Even then, Trimmel clearly understood his move: “I believe that moving to Union is exactly the right thing for me. They are building something with care and attention, and I can be part of the whole,” he said at the time. He spoke of development, of the next step, of growing together. Goals that followed and were achieved include promotion to the Bundesliga and staying up, European nights at the Alte Försterei, games in the Champions League.

Time and again, it was about working hard to achieve something. And time and again, Trimmel was right in the thick of it. On the pitch, he became a reliable constant, a driving force on the right hand side, and later captain. Off the pitch, he became the face of the club, someone who showed attitude, took responsibility, and didn't need to explain what it meant to be a Unioner. He never stated his goals out loud, but they were clear: to grow with this club, to help shape it, to do right by the fans. Looking back, it's safe to say that he achieved them and then some.

Reactions to the contract extension

“When I look back on my time at Union, I am above all grateful,” said a delighted Trimmel. “I have experienced so much here, grown as a player and as a person, and been able to be part of a development at this club that no one could have expected. For me, Union has long been more than just a club; it has become a place where I feel at home and where I want to continue to give my all.”

Horst Heldt, director of professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, added: “Trimmi represents the development of 1. FC Union Berlin in recent years like no other player. He has taken on responsibility on the pitch, led the way as captain, and always identified with the club. The renewed extension is an expression of trust and appreciation, as well as an important sign of continuity within our team.”
