Head Coach to Remain on the Touchline

Steffen Baumgart Extends Contract Early

1. FC Union Berlin and head coach Steffen Baumgart are continuing to work together. The club have agreed to an early contract extension with the Rostock-born coach.

Stability through identity and clarity

When Baumgart took over as head coach of the men's first team just over a year ago, he found them in a challenging situation: nine competitive games without a win, only six points ahead of relegation. With patience, clear communication, and a consistent focus on their own identity, he and his coaching team started the work of stabilising Union step by step.

From the beginning of March 2025, the development became visible. Union went unbeaten in eight consecutive games, including three wins and an emotional high in the spectacular 4-4 draw against VfB Stuttgart at the Alte Försterei through which the team secured their place in the league as early as the 30th match day.

Successful start and continuous development

The 2025/26 season got off to a promising start. Union advanced confidently to the next round of the cup and defeated reigning cup holders VfB Stuttgart in their Bundesliga opener. Union went on to five more wins and three draws, losing six. Particularly noteworthy  was that Union were the first team to take appoint off FC Bayern München this season, and after a strong fight, they only lost 3-2 to the record champions in the cup quarterfinals.

After 16 games, the men's team of 1. FC Union Berlin are in ninth place in the Bundesliga table, a position that underlines the positive development and increased stability of the club.

Comments on the contract extension

“Steffen took over the team during a difficult phase and managed to give it stability and clarity,” said Union’s director of men’s professional football, Horst Heldt. “The development over the past few months shows that we are on the right track. Every day, we feel how united everyone is here on the pitch and beyond. That's why we are convinced that we will continue along this path together.”

“For me, it was crucial from the outset that we work together here, with trust and a clear idea of football,” said Baumgart on the signing of his new contract. “Union stand for cohesion and a consistent attitude on the pitch, which I greatly appreciate. We have created a stable foundation on which we want to continue to build and be successful.”
