Sophie Weidauer Joins Union

1. FC Union Berlin’s women’s team have got another boost with the news that Sophie Weidauer will be playing for them for the next season. The U23 international is moving to Berlin from SV Werder Bremen.

Talented striker with over 120 Bundesliga appearances

Sophie Weidauer grew up in Saxony’s Erzgebirge where she initially played for SV Tanne Thalheim and FC Erzgebirge Aue. At the age of 12, Weidauer joined the youth academy of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in 2014, making her Bundesliga debut for the women's team in 2019 at 17. In the following years, Weidauer established herself as a regular in attack alongside Dina Orschmann, with whom she played in Potsdam from 2020 to 2022. By 2023, Weidauer had made 81 Bundesliga appearances for Turbine, scoring twelve goals.

In the summer of 2023, the striker moved to SV Werder Bremen, where she had her best season to date, scoring eight times in 22 games. Weidauer scored four goals in 21 Bundesliga appearances last season. In the DFB Pokal, she scored twice in the semi-finals to send Bremen to the first final in their club history. Weidauer played a total of 83 minutes in the cup final but ended  up on the losing side, as Bremen  went down 4-2  to FC Bayern. The 23-year-old has scored a total of 24 Bundesliga goals in 124 games.

Weidauer has also played for all German junior women's national teams and celebrated the European Championship title with the U17 team in 2019. Union's current head coach, Ailien Poese, was assistant coach of the DFB team at the time. Weidauer has been playing for the U23 national team since 2024, scoring six times in nine games so far.

  • Weidauer received the bronze Fritz Walter Medal (presented annually to the country's best young players) in 2022.

  • Her goal against Eintracht Frankfurt in October 2024 was voted “Goal of the Month” on ARD's Sportschau.

  • In addition to Orschmann and Poese, Weidauer also knows Tomke Schneider from the current Union squad, with whom she plays in the U23 national team.
