Norwegian defensive talent:

Silje Helgesen gets Union ready for winter

1. FC Union Berlin is strengthening its squad with the addition of Silje Skaara Helgesen. The 21-year-old center-back is transferring from Norwegian first-division club Stabæk Fotball to Berlin.

A regular player in Norway for three years

Silje Helgesen gained her first experience in soccer at her youth club Eiger FK before moving to Viking FK Stavanger. At the beginning of 2022, she made the move to Stabæk Fotball's U19 team. In the same year, at the age of 18, she made her debut in the Toppserien, Norway's top league, before becoming a permanent member of the professional squad in 2023.

Over the past three seasons, Helgesen has been a mainstay in the Stabæk’s defense, playing 72 league games, 67 of them as a starter. In a third of her appearances (24 games) Stabæk kept a clean sheet.

At the same time, Helgesen has represented all Norwegian youth national teams since the U15s and was first called up to the U23 national team in 2023, for which she has made four appearances so far.

Three facts about Silje Helgesen

  • Silje is one of those people who can't get excited about coffee.

  • As a Scandinavian, she loves the sea and feels particularly at home there.

  • She loves cookie dough ice cream more than anything.

Theviews on the Transfer

“It's very special for me to leave Norway for the first time. When I started talking with Union, I immediately found the club very exciting. I see a clear vision and great ambitions here that align perfectly with my own goals,” said Silje Helgesen. “I'm really looking forward to getting to know the team and playing in the stadium soon.”

Jennifer Zietz, Managing Director of Women's Professional Soccer, explained: “Silje is a talented yet composed defender who, despite her young age, has already gained a lot of experience. We are convinced that she will take the next step in her development with us and are very happy to welcome her to Union.”
