Home Friendly Against the Super-Blues
Men's Season Opener Against Ipswich Town
On Saturday, 15.07.2026, 1. FC Union Berlin will host newly promoted Premier League side, Ipswich Town FC, to mark the official opening of the new season. Kick-off will take place at 15:30, following the presentation of the men's first team squad, the coaching staff and support team. The friendly will mark the end of the men's team's pre-season under new head coach Mauro Lustrinelli before the official season's start.
The Opponents
Ipswich Town were founded in 1878 and celebrated their greatest successes under the management of two of the most legendary English national team coaches. Sir Alf Ramsey led the East Anglian side to their only First Division title as a newly promoted team in 1962, before the club won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1978 and 1981 respectively under Sir Bobby Robson. A renaissance at the turn of the millennium could have led to a meeting with Union, as both clubs qualified for the UEFA Cup 2001/02. However, while Union were eliminated in the second round, Ipswich lost to the later semi-finalists Internazionale, despite having won the first leg at home.
After some lean years, Ipswich experienced a resurgence under coach Kieran McKenna, which led to two consecutive promotions from the third division to the Premier League for the 2023/24 season. After relegation, Ipswich secured direct promotion back to the top flight in May of this year. McKenna has since left the club, but his successor for the trip to Köpenick and a new season full of hope is already confirmed. Yesterday, the Premier League club announced the signing of Gary O’Neil, who previously managed RC Strasbourg.
