Cross-Town Transfer for Keeper

Melanie Wagner Leaves Union

Goalkeeper Melanie Wagner is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin after three and a half years. The 23-year-old has signed for FC Viktoria 1889 Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga.

Union's Regionalliga Promotion Goalkeeper

Melanie Wagner, then 20, moved from VfL Wolfsburg II to Berlin in the Summer of 2022. In the following two seasons, she was Union’s regular goalkeeper and celebrated the double of promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and Berlin-Pokal winners in 2024. Wagner played 47 times for Union in the Regionalliga Nordost, keeping a clean sheet in 31 of them. In the promotion season, she conceded only five goals.

In the 2. Liga, Wagner completed the goalkeeping team behind Cara Bösl. In her only league appearance last season against 1. FC Nürnberg, she kept a clean sheet in a goalless draw. She also put in a strong performance in the 1-0 DFB Pokal win against Bundesliga side RasenBallsport Leipzig, securing the team's place in the next round. After Union's promotion to the Bundesliga, her dream of making her debut in Germany's top flight came true on matchday nine when she came on as a substitute in the closing minutes of the 4-1 defeat to her former club VfL Wolfsburg.

After a total of 52 competitive games for 1. FC Union Berlin, her time with the club has now come to an end.

Comments on her departure

“I had a very successful time at Union, where we rose together from the Ragionalliga to the Bundesliga. I am incredibly proud of that – and also that I was able to make my Bundesliga debut this season,” said Wagner on her departure from Union. “I look back on this time with gratitude and joy and am now looking forward to a new chapter.”

“Melanie was an important part of our team – on the way to the 2. Bundesliga, but also over the past year and a half, and she always put herself at the service of the team. We are very grateful to her for that and wish her all the best for her sporting and personal future,” said Jennifer Zietz, Union’s director of women's professional football.
