Quotes From the Head Coach Ahead of Augsburg

Marie-Louise Meets the Press

Marie-Louise Eta held her last weekly press conference as head coach of the men's team at 1. FC Union Berlin on Thursday afternoon. Here is a selection of her quotes ahead of the home game against FC Augsburg

The press conference room at the Alte Försterei was relatively quiet on Thursday afternoon, due to the public holiday. Marie-Louise was nevertheless asked about many themes, from players she knows from the U-19s, to her time after being head coach of the men, when she will take charge of Union's women's team.

On Her last Game in Charge of the Men

"It’s not really a farewell.... I’m just looking forward to the game here at home again. Of course, it’s special to be out on the pitch with the team every day. Working together is a real pleasure. But ultimately, it’s now about preparing as best we can for a Bundesliga match. And we want to win that on Saturday here at home against Augsburg. That’s simply where the focus lies."

On the Opponents

"[They are] a team that are extremely solid under Manuel Baum at the moment, having achieved very good results, most recently six games without defeat. And of course, coming here, they believe in themselves, and want to reach Europe, naturally. That’s always something very special, and is why we know we’re up against a team that won’t give us anything for free."

On the Experience

"I think that [what I've learned]will become clear during the holidays. It was all about getting the best out of every day, working together with the staff, the coaching team and the lads to win matches at the weekend. There will be one or two things you can always take away with you. That’s true no matter what experience you’ve had, no matter what you’ve done. And I’m sure I’ll be able to put a lot of that to good use for the women’s team in the new season."

On Danilho and Diogo

"They have shown over the years what an extremely important factor in the team’s success they were. Very consistent in their performances at the back, key players. That’s been evident again in recent weeks. In day-to-day training too, they’re the lads who lead the way... They have done a great deal for the club. So it’s important to give them a proper send-off on Saturday with a good performance. And I’m sure they’ll give it their all once again."

On Linus Güther

"He remains an integral part of the squad here, and at the same time it’s important for a young player to get playing time, also for his development over the coming years, because we have very, very high hopes for him... At the same time, it’s always important for a young player to be on the pitch, to get some minutes under his belt, rather than just being part of the first-team squad every weekend, which is certainly nice, but only ever playing for a few minutes at a time doesn’t really help his development... Basically, we can look forward to the next few years with Linus here."

On Life After Saturday

"I think a holiday is called for now, but at the same time there will be topics that are also important for the build-up. So it’ll be a mix of holiday and preparation for what’s coming up."
