A New Start in the Summer.
Marie-Louise Eta Becomes Women's Head Coach
1. FC Union Berlin have appointed Marie-Louise Eta as the new head coach of the women’s first team. Eta will take over from Ailien Poese for the new season, with Poese set to take on the role of head coach of the junior girls and women’s teams at Union’s youth academy.
Eta began her role at Union in the summer of 2023 as assistant coach of the men's U-19s. During that season, she joined the men’s first team in the same capacity in their battle to avoid relegation, which was secured on the final matchday. Last season, she then played a key role as an individual coach in the women’s first team’s 2. Liga title and promotion to the Bundesliga. Since the summer, the holder of the UEFA Pro Licence has been on the touchline at Union for the first time as a head coach in her own right, succeeding Marco Grote with the U-19s, and leading the team to an unbeaten league title in the DFB Youth League.
Eta will continue to lead the U19s as head coach until the end of the season as they face a battle in the main round of the Youth League for a place in the round of 16 of the German Championship.
“I am delighted by the club’s confidence in me, enabling me to make the step up to professional football as head coach of the women’s first team,” said Eta on the signing of her contract. “I already know many of the players from last season, and have closely followed the team throughout their first Bundesliga campaign. Ailien has achieved a great deal with the team in recent years. We want to build on that in the coming season and continue to develop further. In the coming weeks, however, my focus will be on the season finale with the U19s, with whom we want to win as many games as possible.”
“Loui has already gained valuable experience in both professional departments and was an important part of the team during our promotion season thanks to her expertise and personality,” said Union’s director of women’s professional football, Jennifer Zietz, on the new appointment. “Given her successful work as a coach at the club and her experience as a Bundesliga player, we are convinced that together we can take the next steps and live up to our ambitions. We look forward to working with her and embarking on this journey together from the summer, but for now we’re keeping our fingers crossed for her to achieve the greatest possible success with the U19s.”
